OVERVIEW
When it comes to the heart of your air-cooled Volkswagen''s performance, the idle jet is arguably the most critical component for smooth daily drivability and off-the-line throttle response. The Weber IDF Idle Jet 50 is a precision-engineered fuel metering component designed specifically for the iconic Weber IDF series and the EMPI HPMX carburetors. In a dual-carburetor setup, the idle circuit doesn''t just handle the engine while it is sitting at a stoplight; it actually controls the fuel mixture through the transition phase up to approximately 2,500 to 3,000 RPM. If your engine is experiencing a lean "pop" through the carburetors or a frustrating hesitation when you tip into the throttle, moving to this .50 size jet is often the silver bullet for achieving that crisp, responsive acceleration that air-cooled enthusiasts crave.
Crafted from high-grade, corrosion-resistant brass, these jets are manufactured to exacting tolerances to ensure consistent fuel flow across all cylinders. At Appletree Automotive, we know that tuning a high-performance VW engine requires patience and the right parts. Whether you are running a 1600cc street sleeper or a 2276cc stroker motor, the .50 idle jet serves as a foundational "middle-ground" starting point for many mild to moderate performance builds. Because the idle jet is responsible for such a large portion of your cruising RPM range, using a genuine-style precision jet ensures that you aren''t fighting manufacturing inconsistencies that are common with "no-name" knock-offs. These jets are sold individually, allowing you to customize your jetting profile for specific atmospheric conditions, altitudes, or engine modifications.

PRO TIPS
1. Diagnosing the "Flat Spot" Transition
If your VW stumbles or "sneezes" through the carburetor intake when you gently press the gas pedal, your idle jet is likely too small (lean). The .50 jet is a common upgrade for engines that feel sluggish or hesitant just off-idle. However, before swapping jets, always ensure your ignition timing is set correctly and your accelerator pump squirt is hitting the center of the venture. If the stumble persists between 1,500 and 2,500 RPM, it is a clear sign that the idle jet circuit needs more fuel, and stepping up to this size can eliminate that annoying flat spot and protect your engine from lean-run overheating.
2. Proper Cleaning Technique
Because the orifice in a .50 jet is incredibly small, even a tiny speck of debris or fuel varnish can completely ruin your engine''s idle quality. Never use a metal wire or a welding tip cleaner to clear a clogged jet; the brass is soft, and you will inadvertently "re-size" the jet, making it inconsistent with the others in your engine. Always use high-pressure compressed air and a quality aerosol carburetor cleaner. If you can''t see a perfect, round circle of light through the center of the jet when holding it up to a lamp, it isn''t clean yet.
3. The Importance of Syncing and Pairs
When tuning dual carburetors, consistency is king. You should always replace idle jets in complete sets for all barrels of your carburetors (four jets total for a dual-carb setup). Once the new .50 jets are installed, you must re-synchronize your carburetors using a high-quality airflow meter (Snail Gauge). Changing the jet size alters the fuel-to-air ratio at idle, which means your idle mixture screws will need to be re-adjusted. Start by turning the mixture screws all the way in until they lightly seat, then back them out 1.5 turns as a baseline before fine-tuning for the highest possible RPM at a steady idle.
