OVERVIEW
Precision tuning is the heartbeat of any high-performance air-cooled engine, and the Weber IDF Idle Jet .40 is a critical component in achieving that perfect stoichiometric balance. Designed specifically for the iconic Weber IDF series and its high-quality counterpart, the EMPI HPMX, this idle jet serves as the primary fuel metering device for your engine''s idle and off-idle transition circuits. When you are cruising through the neighborhood or sitting at a stoplight, it is this tiny brass masterpiece that dictates how smoothly your Volkswagen or Porsche responds to the initial crack of the throttle. A properly sized .40 idle jet ensures that your engine doesn''t suffer from the dreaded "lean stumble" that plagues poorly tuned dual-carburetor setups, providing a seamless hand-off from the idle circuit to the main discharge nozzles.
Crafted to exacting tolerances, these jets are essential for enthusiasts who demand reliability and crisp performance from their dual 40, 44, or 48 IDF setups. The .40 size is frequently utilized in smaller displacement engines or in specific high-altitude applications where a leaner fuel delivery is required to maintain optimal combustion. Because the idle circuit in a Weber-style carburetor actually handles the fuel requirements for up to nearly 3,000 RPM, choosing the right idle jet is arguably more important for street drivability than the main jets themselves. Whether you are building a weekend cruiser or a vintage racer, these EMPI-sourced Weber-style jets provide the consistency and accuracy needed to dial in your air-fuel ratios with professional-grade precision. Don''t settle for "close enough" when it comes to your engine''s fueling; ensure every cylinder is firing perfectly with genuine-spec components from Appletree Automotive.

PRO TIPS
1. Never Use Metal Wires for Cleaning: When you are cleaning your idle jets, it is incredibly tempting to poke a small wire or a needle through the orifice to clear a clog. Don''t do it! These jets are machined to extremely tight tolerances. Using a hard metal tool can scratch the internal bore or slightly enlarge the hole, completely changing the flow characteristics of the jet. Always use pressurized aerosol carburetor cleaner and compressed air to blow out obstructions. If the jet is heavily gummed up, an ultrasonic cleaner is the safest and most effective professional method to restore it to factory specs.
2. Understanding the Transition Zone: Many owners mistakenly believe the idle jet only affects the engine while it is idling. In reality, the idle jet and the idle air air-bleed work together to provide fuel through the "progression holes" as the butterfly valve opens. This "transition zone" lasts until the engine reaches enough vacuum to pull fuel from the main venturis (usually around 2,500 to 3,000 RPM). If your engine "pops" or hesitates when you first step on the gas, it is a sign that your idle jet is either clogged or too small for your specific engine displacement and camshaft profile.
3. Balance Your Air-Fuel Mixture: When installing new .40 idle jets, always perform a final synchronization of your carburetors. Use a high-quality airflow meter (Snail Gauge) to ensure both carburetors are pulling the same volume of air, and then adjust your idle mixture screws. Turn the screw in until the engine stumbles, then back it out until the RPM peaks. If you find yourself having to turn the mixture screw out more than 2.5 or 3 full turns to get a smooth idle, it is a strong indicator that you need to step up to a larger idle jet size, such as a .45 or .50, to compensate for the engine''s fuel demand.
