OVERVIEW
When you''re pushing the limits of your air-cooled Volkswagen engine, the standard organic clutch disc often becomes the weak link in your drivetrain. The EMPI Pro Grip 200mm Metal Woven Clutch Disc is engineered specifically to bridge the gap between daily drivability and high-performance reliability. One of the most common complaints with heavy-duty performance clutches is the aggressive "on-off" switch feeling that leads to violent chatter and hard grabbing, making stop-and-go traffic a nightmare. This Pro Grip disc utilizes a space-age thermo-dynamic lining that is designed to handle the increased heat and friction generated by high-horsepower engines while maintaining a smooth, progressive engagement that feels remarkably like a stock disc. Whether you are building a spirited street Beetle or a rugged off-road machine, this disc provides the biting power you need without sacrificing the comfort of your left leg or the longevity of your transaxle components.
Durability is the cornerstone of the Pro Grip design. By integrating metal woven materials into the friction surface, EMPI has created a disc that resists glazing and heat fade far better than traditional organic materials. This advanced construction ensures that as the temperature rises during aggressive shifting or heavy-load situations, the coefficient of friction remains stable, giving you consistent pedal feel and predictable launch characteristics every time you drop the hammer. It is the ideal choice for enthusiasts who have upgraded to a 1600cc dual-port or larger displacement engine and want to ensure every bit of torque is transferred effectively to the ground. At Appletree Automotive, we know that your VW is more than just a carit''s a passion projectand installing the 4085-10 Pro Grip disc is a proactive step toward building a bulletproof drivetrain that can handle today''s modern performance demands.

PRO TIPS
1. Surface Preparation is Critical
Before installing your new Pro Grip disc, it is imperative that you inspect both the flywheel and the pressure plate. If you are not installing a brand-new flywheel, you must have your existing one professionally resurfaced. A "glazed" or uneven flywheel surface will prevent the metal woven material from bedding in properly, which can lead to premature wear and clutch chatter. Additionally, use a high-quality brake cleaner to remove every trace of shipping oil or grease from the pressure plate and flywheel faces. Even a small fingerprint of grease can cause the clutch to slip under load, potentially ruining the disc before it''s even broken in.
2. Use the Right Alignment Tool
Never attempt to "eye-ball" the alignment of the clutch disc. Always use a dedicated 24-spline VW clutch alignment tool to center the disc perfectly before tightening the pressure plate bolts. If the disc is even slightly off-center, you will struggle to mate the engine to the transmission, and you risk bending the disc''s center hub or damaging the transmission input shaft splines. When tightening the pressure plate, work in a star pattern and torque the bolts in increments to the factory specification (typically 18 ft-lbs for 8mm bolts) to ensure even pressure across the entire surface.
3. Respect the Break-In Period
While it is tempting to test out the "Pro Grip" name immediately, metal woven discs require a proper break-in period to achieve maximum performance. We recommend at least 300 to 500 miles of normal city drivingwhich involves frequent shifting and engagementbefore subjecting the clutch to full-throttle launches or heavy off-road abuse. This allows the thermo-dynamic lining to heat-cycle and conform to the microscopic variations in the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces. Don''t "ride" the clutch during this time; instead, focus on clean, decisive engagements to ensure the longest possible service life for your drivetrain.
