Tech Tips & Installation Advice
- The "Crush" Advantage: These gaskets are designed to deform slightly when torqued down. This "crush" is what creates the airtight seal. Because of this, we recommend using new gaskets every time the exhaust is removed to ensure the seal remains 100% effective.
- Surface Cleaning: Before installation, use a gasket scraper or wire brush to remove all old gasket material and carbon deposits from the cylinder head surface and the header flange. A clean mating surface is critical to prevent leaks.
- Even Torquing: To ensure the copper crushes evenly, tighten your exhaust nuts in an alternating pattern. Start with a low torque and gradually increase to the factory specification (typically 14-18 ft-lbs). This prevents the header flange from warping during installation.
- Heat Cycle Check: Exhaust components expand and contract significantly during operation. After the first few heat cycles (roughly 50-100 miles of driving), re-check the tightness of your exhaust nuts to ensure they haven't loosened up as the gaskets settled.
- Stop the "Tick": If you hear a rhythmic ticking sound that increases with engine RPM, you likely have an exhaust leak. Using these copper gaskets is the most effective way to solve "blown gasket" issues that frequently plague air-cooled engines with thin-flange headers.
