OVERVIEW
When you''re working in the cramped confines of a high-performance air-cooled Volkswagen engine, every millimeter of clearance counts. Standard 8mm nuts typically require a 13mm wrench, which can be an absolute nightmare to maneuver around oversized heater boxes, merged competition headers, or dual carburetor manifolds. These EMPI 6-point engine nuts are the definitive solution for the VW enthusiast who has ever struggled with a rounded-off nut or a barked knuckle. By reducing the external hex size to a compact 10mm while maintaining a robust M8 x 1.25 internal thread, these nuts allow for effortless installation and removal in areas where a standard socket or box-end wrench simply won''t fit. Whether you are sealing up a fresh set of cylinder heads or installing a custom exhaust system, these specialized fasteners provide the professional clearance needed for a clean, hassle-free build.
Beyond their space-saving dimensions, these engine nuts are engineered for the harsh environment of a horizontal-opposed engine. Each nut is finished in a high-quality gold zinc plating, providing an essential layer of corrosion resistance against the extreme heat cycles and road grime that VW exhaust and intake systems endure. This plating not only keeps your engine bay looking sharp with a classic "pro-build" aesthetic but also ensures that the nuts remain removable years down the line. Sold in a convenient set of eight, this kit provides enough hardware to fully secure two dual-port intake manifolds or a complete 4-into-1 exhaust header. Don''t let poor access compromise your torque accuracy; upgrade to these reduced-head fasteners and experience the difference that the right hardware makes in your garage.
FITMENT
These 8mm engine nuts are universal for almost all air-cooled VW applications using standard M8 studs, including:
- Volkswagen Beetle: 1950 through 1979 (Standard and Super Beetle)
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1974
- Volkswagen Bus / Type 2: 1950 through 1971 (1200cc, 1500cc, and 1600cc engines)
- Volkswagen Type 3 (Fastback, Squareback, Notchback): 1961 through 1973
- Volkswagen Thing (Type 181): 1973 through 1974
- Custom Applications: Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, and Trikes utilizing VW Type 1 based engines

PRO TIPS
1. Always Use High-Temp Anti-Seize
Because these nuts are often used on exhaust studs, they are subject to extreme heat cycles that can cause "galling" or seizing over time. Even with the protective gold zinc plating, we highly recommend applying a small dab of copper or nickel-based anti-seize to the studs before installation. This ensures that when you need to perform maintenance or swap an exhaust system in the future, the nuts will spin off easily without snapping the stud off inside your cylinder head, saving you hours of drilling and tapping.
2. Use a 6-Point Box-End Wrench for Final Torque
While these nuts allow you to use a smaller 10mm wrench, remember that you are still applying the torque required for an 8mm fastener. To prevent rounding off the smaller hex head, always use a high-quality 6-point box-end wrench or a 6-point thin-wall socket rather than a 12-point tool. This provides maximum surface contact on the flats of the nut, allowing you to reach the factory torque spec (usually 14-18 ft-lbs for intake/exhaust) without the risk of slipping in tight quarters.
3. Check Torque After the First Heat Cycle
New exhaust gaskets and hardware have a tendency to "settle" after the engine reaches operating temperature for the first time. After you install these nuts and take your VW for its first drive, wait for the engine to cool down completely and then go back through and re-check the tightness. This is especially important on performance headers where the flange might be slightly thicker than stock. A quick re-torque ensures you won''t develop an annoying exhaust leak or lose a nut on the highway.
