1. Prevent Fraying During the Cut

Because this is a heavy-gauge braided cable, using standard wire cutters or dull pliers will almost certainly crush the casing and cause the individual steel strands to fray, making it impossible to thread through your linkage. For a professional finish, we highly recommend using a high-speed rotary tool with a reinforced cutoff wheel or a dedicated cable-cutting tool. Before you make your cut, wrap the area tightly with a single layer of masking tape or apply a small drop of thin cyanoacrylate (Super Glue) to the cut zone. This keeps the strands bonded together, ensuring a clean, sharp end that slides easily into your barrel nut or throttle connector.

2. Addressing Guide Tube Compatibility

The most common mistake installers make is trying to force this 3mm Super Cable through the original factory plastic guide sleeve or the narrow metal tube inside the VW tunnel. It won''t fit. When running this cable, you should either use a larger diameter stainless steel guide tube or route the cable through a series of properly secured pulleys or oversized conduits. If you are building a sand rail, ensure the cable is supported every 24 to 36 inches to prevent "cable whip," which can lead to inconsistent throttle return and premature wear on the cable strands.

3. Lubrication and Linkage Prep

While the braided steel is incredibly strong, it still generates friction. Before final installation, wipe the length of the cable with a high-quality dry film lubricant or a light coat of lithium grease. Avoid heavy, tacky greases that can attract sand and grit, which act like sandpaper inside your guide tubes. Additionally, check your throttle linkage "football" or barrel nut. Many stock linkage components are drilled for 1.5mm or 2mm cables. You may need to use a drill press to slightly enlarge the hole in your linkage connector to 3.2mm to allow the Super Cable to pass through freely without kinking or binding at the carburetor end.
