OVERVIEW
When you''re tearing through the dunes or navigating a technical trail, the last thing you want is a snapped or binding throttle cable. The EMPI 16-foot Heavy Duty Universal Throttle Cable is engineered to provide the precise, snappy response that air-cooled enthusiasts demand. Whether you are building a custom sand rail, a classic Manx-style dune buggy, or a long-wheelbase woods buggy, this cable offers the extra length required to bridge the gap between your pedal assembly and the carburetor. Unlike stock cables that are fixed to a specific Volkswagen model length, this universal solution ensures that you aren''t limited by factory dimensions, allowing for custom routing that stays clear of heat sources and moving suspension components. It provides the peace of mind that comes with a robust, oversized cable designed to handle the stresses of high-performance off-road driving.
Durability is the hallmark of this heavy-gauge braided wire cable. Constructed from high-tensile steel strands, it is designed to withstand the rigors of off-road environments where dust, sand, and vibration are constant threats. This is the same high-quality cable found in professional-grade throttle kits, now available as a standalone replacement or primary component for your build. Because it arrives at a generous 16-foot length, it provides the ultimate flexibilitysimply route the cable through your chassis, mark your required length, and cut it to fit your specific needs. It is an essential item for any VW builder''s toolbox, ensuring you have the reach and strength to keep your engine screaming from idle to wide-open throttle without the fear of cable stretch or failure.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Prevent Fraying During the Cut
Cutting a braided steel cable can often lead to frayed ends that make it nearly impossible to thread through a cable stop or solderless nipple. To ensure a clean cut, wrap the area you intend to cut tightly with a small piece of electrical tape or masking tape. Use a high-quality, sharp pair of wire cutters or a dedicated cable cutting tool. For an even more professional finish, you can apply a small drop of thin super glue or silver solder to the tip of the cable after cutting; this "locks" the strands together permanently, ensuring the cable never unravels during future maintenance or adjustments.
Tip 2: Proper Lubrication for Off-Road Use
While it may be tempting to use heavy grease on a throttle cable, doing so can actually be detrimental in off-road environments. Grease attracts sand and grit, which creates an abrasive paste that will eventually wear through the cable or cause the throttle to stick open. Instead, we recommend using a "dry" graphite lubricant or a high-quality silicone spray. These lubricants provide the necessary slickness for a smooth pedal feel without attracting the debris found in the desert or on the trail. Always ensure the cable housing is clean and free of kinks before sliding the new 16-foot cable into place.
Tip 3: Routing and Slack Management
When routing a 16-foot cable, avoid sharp 90-degree bends which increase friction and lead to premature cable failure. Aim for large, sweeping curves throughout the chassis. Additionally, always check your "Wide Open Throttle" (WOT) at the carburetor while someone else fully depresses the accelerator pedal. You want to ensure the carburetor linkage hits its internal stop just as the pedal hits its floor stop. If the cable is too tight, you risk snapping it by over-stressing the strands at the pedal assembly. Leave a tiny amount of "free play" at idle to ensure the engine returns to a proper idle speed every time you lift off the gas.
