1. Upgrade Your Charging Wire
When jumping from a stock 30-amp generator or a 55-amp alternator to a high-output 90-amp unit, the original factory wiring is often insufficient. The stock 10-gauge wire can become a bottleneck and potentially overheat under the full load of a 90-amp alternator. For the best performance and safety, we strongly recommend running a new, high-quality 8-gauge or even 6-gauge power wire directly from the alternator''s B+ terminal to the battery or the starter solenoid. This ensures that the increased amperage reaches your battery without excessive voltage drop or heat buildup, allowing the alternator to work at its maximum efficiency.
2. Perfect Pulley Alignment and Shimming
Proper belt alignment is critical for the longevity of both your alternator bearings and your fan belt. When installing this unit, always check the alignment between the alternator pulley and the crank pulley using a straight edge. Because this is a high-output unit, there is more magnetic drag on the belt than a stock unit. You must use the correct amount of shims between the pulley halves to achieve the perfect tension. If the belt is too tight, you will wear out the front bearing prematurely; if it is too loose, the belt will slip and squeal, especially when the alternator is under heavy load charging a low battery.
