OVERVIEW
If you''ve ever wrestled with a standard 13mm wrench while trying to tighten a header nut against a large-diameter performance exhaust pipe, you know exactly why the BUGPACK Clearanced Exhaust Nut Set is a mandatory upgrade for any serious air-cooled builder. Standard hardware often leaves zero room for a socket or even a thin-walled wrench, leading to rounded-off corners and frustrating exhaust leaks. These specially engineered 8mm nuts feature a reduced 11mm hex head, providing the critical clearance needed for high-flow headers, merged competitions systems, and custom exhaust setups where space is at an absolute premium. By shrinking the outer diameter of the nut without sacrificing thread engagement, BUGPACK has solved one of the most common installation headaches in the VW performance world.
Crafted from high-strength steel and finished with a durable zinc plating, these nuts are designed to withstand the extreme thermal cycling and corrosive environment of a Volkswagen exhaust system. While they are a lifesaver for exhaust headers, their utility extends to intake manifolds as well, particularly on dual-carburetor setups where the manifold casting or carburetor linkage often interferes with standard 13mm hardware. This 8-piece set provides a complete solution for a standard four-port cylinder head configuration, ensuring that every stud is secured with the proper clearance. Whether you are building a street-legal Beetle or a high-performance desert rail, these clearanced nuts provide the professional finish and ease of maintenance that standard hardware simply cannot offer.
FITMENT
This hardware set is designed for use on all air-cooled Volkswagen engines utilizing standard 8mm exhaust or intake studs. Common applications include:
- Volkswagen Type 1: Beetle, Karmann Ghia, and Thing (1950-1979)
- Volkswagen Type 2: Bus, Transporter, and Kombi (1950-1971 with Type 1 style engines)
- Volkswagen Type 3: Squareback, Fastback, and Notchback
- Custom Applications: Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, and Trikes utilizing VW-based engines
- Intake Manifolds: Compatible with most aftermarket dual-carburetor intake manifolds (Weber, Dellorto, Kadron)

PRO TIPS
1. Always Use High-Temperature Anti-Seize
Exhaust studs are subjected to some of the most intense heat cycles of any component on your engine. To prevent the steel nuts from "galling" or seizing onto the studs over time, always apply a small amount of high-temperature copper or nickel-based anti-seize to the threads before installation. This is especially important for the bottom studs, which are often exposed to road salt and moisture. Taking this extra step now will save you from the nightmare of a snapped stud or a stripped thread the next time you need to remove your exhaust system for maintenance.
2. The Right Tool for the Tightest Spots
Even with the reduced 11mm head size, some merged headers can still be incredibly tight. For the best results, use a high-quality 11mm 12-point box-end wrench with a slim profile. A 12-point wrench allows for a smaller "swing" in confined spaces compared to a 6-point wrench, making it much easier to tighten the nuts in quarter-turn increments. If you are working on a particularly cramped dual-carburetor intake manifold, a "stubby" 11mm wrench or a specialized "distributor wrench" can provide the extra leverage and angle needed to reach those hidden inner studs.
3. Re-Torque After the First Heat Cycle
New exhaust gaskets and hardware have a tendency to settle after they have been through a full heat cycle. After installing your new BUGPACK hardware, start the engine and let it reach full operating temperature, then allow it to cool down completely. Once the engine is cold, go back and check the torque on each 11mm nut. You will often find that they require a small additional turn to remain fully seated. Checking them after the first few drives will prevent exhaust leaks that can lead to burnt valves or "popping" noises during deceleration.
