1. Always Use High-Quality Jam Nuts and Check Thread Engagement
When installing your Allstar Pro Rod Ends, it is critical to use a high-quality jam nut to lock the rod end in place. A loose rod end can quickly vibrate and damage the internal threads of your linkage or the rod end shank itself. As a rule of thumb for safety, ensure that you have at least 1.5 times the diameter of the shank in thread engagement. For this 5/8-inch thread, that means you should have at least 15/16-inch of the shank threaded into your bung or tube. Never "stretch" a linkage by leaving only a few threads engaged, as this creates a massive failure point that could lead to a loss of steering or suspension control.
2. Proper Alignment with Misalignment Spacers
To get the most out of your 1/2-inch ID rod end, consider using high-misalignment spacers if your application requires a wide range of motion. While the spherical ball allows for significant pivoting, the body of the rod end can eventually make contact with the mounting bracket, which limits travel and can cause the shank to bend or snap. Misalignment spacers narrow the mounting point and allow the ball to rotate further before the housing interferes. This is especially important on VW Baja front ends where travel is high. Always cycle your suspension or steering through its full range of motion on the lift to ensure there is no "binding" at the rod end body.
3. Maintenance in Extreme Off-Road Conditions
While these rod ends are PTFE lined and "maintenance-free" in terms of lubrication, they are not "maintenance-free" in terms of cleanliness. If you are running your VW in heavy mud or fine silty sand, the grit can eventually work its way into the race and act like sandpaper against the PTFE liner. After a weekend in the dirt, we recommend cleaning the rod ends with a dry cloth or compressed air. Avoid using heavy greases or tacky sprays on the outside of the joint, as these will actually attract more dirt and accelerate wear. If you must use a protectant, use a "dry" PTFE-based spray that won''t leave a sticky residue, ensuring your rod ends stay tight and smooth for years to come.
