PRO TIPS
1. Proper Welding Preparation for Chrome Moly
Since these tube ends are made from 4130 Chrome Moly, preparation is absolutely critical for a safe weld. Before welding, ensure you have removed all oils, dirt, and the protective coating from the bung and the inside of the tubing. We highly recommend TIG welding these components using a compatible filler rod like ER70S-2 or ER80S-D2. If you are MIG welding, ensure you have adequate penetration but be mindful of the heat-affected zone. To achieve the strongest bond, many builders prefer to drill a small "plug weld" hole in the tubing about a half-inch from the end, allowing you to secure the bung in two separate locations.
2. Always Chase Your Threads After Welding
Even the most careful welder will introduce a significant amount of heat into the tube end during the installation process. This heat can cause the metal to expand and contract, which may slightly distort the 5/8-18 threads. To ensure your heim joints or rod ends thread in smoothly and don''t gall the threads, always run a 5/8-18 RH tap through the bung after it has completely cooled to room temperature. Never try to force a rod end into a "hot" bung, as this can permanently seize the components together, ruining both parts instantly.
3. Incorporate a Turnbuckle Design
When building steering or suspension links, it is a master-level move to use a Right Hand thread bung on one end and a Left Hand thread bung on the other. This creates a "turnbuckle" effect, allowing you to adjust the length of the rod (and therefore your alignment or toe-in) by simply rotating the tube while it is still installed on the vehicle. If you use Right Hand threads on both ends, you will have to disconnect one side of the link every time you need to make an adjustment. Pair this ALL22538 with the corresponding Allstar Left Hand tube end for a professional, adjustable setup.
