OVERVIEW
Precision fuel delivery is the lifeblood of any high-performance air-cooled engine, and the EMPI Weber IDF Main Jet 140 is a critical component for achieving that perfect stoichiometric balance. When you are running a dual Weber IDF or EMPI HPMX setup on your Volkswagen, the main jet handles the heavy lifting once you transition out of the idle circuit and into the heart of the power band. A 140 main jet is often the "sweet spot" for many 1776cc to 1915cc engines, providing the necessary fuel volume to keep cylinder head temperatures in check while maximizing throttle response. These jets are manufactured with exacting tolerances to ensure that each carburetor in your dual-setup is pulling its weight equally, preventing the lean-run conditions that can lead to catastrophic piston failure in air-cooled applications.
Don''t let a "close enough" tuning approach rob you of horsepower or reliability. The Weber IDF series is legendary for its tunability, but that flexibility is only useful if you have the right brass on hand. These 140 main jets allow you to fine-tune your fuel curve based on your specific venturi size, camshaft profile, and exhaust backpressure. Whether you are building a weekend cruiser or a high-revving sand rail, having a selection of genuine EMPI jets ensures that you can adjust for altitude changes or seasonal temperature swings. Investing in high-quality main jets is the cheapest insurance policy you can buy for your engine, ensuring that your air-cooled flat-four sings all the way to redline without a stumble.
FITMENT
This 140 Main Jet is designed specifically for Weber IDF and EMPI HPMX series carburetors commonly found on the following air-cooled Volkswagen and Porsche applications:
- VW Beetle (Type 1): 1946 through 1979 (Performance dual-carb upgrades).
- VW Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1974.
- VW Bus / Transporter (Type 2): 1950 through 1979 (Both 1600cc and Type 4 engine conversions).
- VW Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1961 through 1973.
- VW Thing (Type 181): 1973 through 1975.
- Porsche 356 & 912: Often utilized in Weber conversion kits.
- Custom Sand Rails & Dune Buggies: Using 40mm, 44mm, or 48mm IDF carburetors.

PRO TIPS
1. The Venturi Relationship
When selecting a 140 main jet, always consider your venturi (choke) size first. A general rule of thumb for Weber IDF tuning is to multiply your venturi size by 4 to find a starting point for your main jet. For example, if you are running 32mm venturis, a 128 or 130 jet is a common start, but high-performance builds or engines with aggressive cams often require stepping up to this 140 size to prevent leaning out at the top end. If you notice a flat spot or hesitation when the secondary's should be kicking in, it is often a sign that you need to step up your main jet size to match your airflow.
2. Balancing with Air Correction Jets
The main jet does not work in a vacuum; it works in tandem with the air correction jet. While the 140 main jet determines the total volume of fuel available, the air correction jet determines when and how that fuel is atomized as the RPMs climb. If your engine feels great in the mid-range but starts to "nose over" or sputter at high RPM, you might need to adjust your air correction jet. However, always change the main jet first to establish your baseline fuel curve before trying to fix a delivery issue with air adjustments. Consistency is key when tuning dual carbs, so ensure both carbs are jetted identically.
3. Perform a "Plug Chop" for Verification
The only way to know for sure if the 140 main jet is right for your specific engine and local climate is to read the spark plugs. To do this accurately, perform what is known as a "plug chop." Bring the engine up to operating temperature, find a safe stretch of road, and run the engine at sustained high RPM (where the main circuit is fully active) for about 10 seconds. Then, immediately push in the clutch and kill the ignition simultaneously. Pull the plugs and look at the porcelain color. A light tan or "cardboard" brown indicates the 140 jet is perfect. If it is white or blistered, you are too lean and need a larger jet; if it is black and sooty, you are too rich and should drop down a size.
