OVERVIEW
When you are piloting a 1971 to 1974 Super Beetle, maintaining precise control over your steering geometry is paramount to both safety and driving enjoyment. The EMPI Steering Damper is an essential component designed specifically to counteract the inherent feedback and road vibrations that can plague the unique MacPherson strut front end of these classic Volkswagens. Often referred to as a horizontal shock absorber for your steering system, this damper acts as the first line of defense against the dreaded ''Super Beetle Shimmy.'' By absorbing the energy from potholes, uneven pavement, and road debris, it ensures that these jarring forces aren''t transmitted directly through the steering linkage and into the driver''s hands. Without a functional damper, your steering box and tie rod ends are subjected to excessive wear and tear, leading to a loose, unpredictable feel that can compromise your confidence on the highway.
This premium replacement steering damper from EMPI is engineered to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, providing the perfect balance of resistance and fluid movement. Over time, factory dampers lose their hydraulic pressure or begin to leak, resulting in a steering wheel that feels overly light or oscillates violently at certain speeds. Replacing your worn-out unit with this high-quality damper restores the factory-intended road feel, giving you a firm, stable connection to the pavement. Whether you are performing a full front-end restoration or simply performing routine maintenance to keep your daily driver safe, this damper is a non-negotiable upgrade. It is designed for a direct bolt-on installation, ensuring that you spend less time in the garage and more time enjoying the open road in your vintage VW.

PRO TIPS
Diagnosing the ''Super Beetle Shimmy''
If you experience a violent shaking in the steering wheel when hitting a bump or reaching speeds between 45 and 55 MPH, your steering damper is likely the primary culprit. While the Super Beetle front end is sensitive to tire balance and bushing wear, a blown damper is the most common reason the steering fails to ''self-correct'' after an impact. To test yours, unbolt one end of the damper and compress it by hand. If you feel any dead spots, or if it moves with very little resistance, the internal valving has failed and it must be replaced immediately to prevent damage to your steering box.
Proper Installation and Hardware Inspection
When installing your new EMPI steering damper, always inspect the mounting bolts and the metal sleeves inside the bushings. Over decades of use, these bolts can become thin or eccentric, leading to ''play'' even with a brand-new damper. We recommend using a small amount of anti-seize on the bolt shafts to ensure they don''t rust-weld to the inner sleeves in the future. Ensure the damper is mounted in the correct orientation as per your factory service manual; if it is mounted under tension or at an awkward angle, the seals will fail prematurely, leading to hydraulic leaks.
The Complete Steering Refresh
While the steering damper is a critical fix, it is rarely the only part that needs attention in a 50-year-old Super Beetle. If you are replacing the damper, we highly recommend inspecting your center tie rod (drag link) and your outer tie rod ends at the same time. The Super Beetle MacPherson strut system relies on every component being tight to maintain alignment. If your tie rod boots are cracked or the joints have play, the new damper will be forced to work twice as hard to mask those mechanical failures, which will shorten its lifespan. Do the job once, do it right, and enjoy a vibration-free ride.
