OVERVIEW
Upgrade your air-cooled Volkswagen''s exhaust efficiency and shed unnecessary weight with the BUGPACK Raw Steel Heater Box J-Tubes. These high-performance J-tubes are the definitive solution for VW enthusiasts looking to eliminate restrictive, heavy factory heater boxes in favor of a streamlined, high-flow exhaust path. By replacing the bulky heater boxes with these precision-engineered tubes, you significantly reduce the thermal mass hanging off your cylinder heads, which can lead to lower engine operating temperatures and improved throttle response. Whether you are building a dedicated strip car, a weekend cruiser, or a rugged off-road dune buggy, these J-tubes provide the clearance and flow characteristics necessary to maximize your engine''s output. BUGPACK has long been a trusted name in the VW scene, and these tubes carry on that legacy of durability and performance-focused engineering.
Construction quality is paramount when dealing with the extreme heat cycles of an air-cooled engine, and these J-tubes are built to withstand the rigors of the road. Manufactured from high-quality 1-1/2 inch mild steel tubing, they offer a significant increase in internal volume compared to stock components, allowing spent exhaust gases to exit the head with minimal backpressure. The standout feature is the heavy-duty .350-inch thick flange, which is TIG welded to the tubing to provide a rock-solid, warp-resistant mating surface. This thick flange ensures a superior seal against the exhaust port, preventing the annoying leaks that often plague thinner, inferior alternatives. The slip-joint design offers essential flexibility during installation, making it much easier to align your exhaust system components and account for the natural expansion and contraction of the metal as it heats up and cools down. Sold as a pair, these raw steel tubes are a blank canvas ready for your choice of high-temp coating or paint.

PRO TIPS
1. Protect the Raw Steel Finish
Because these J-tubes are shipped in raw steel, they are susceptible to surface rust if left untreated. Before the final installation, we highly recommend cleaning the tubes with a degreaser and applying a high-quality, high-heat header paint or having them ceramic coated. This not only prevents corrosion but also helps manage engine bay temperatures. If you are painting them yourself, ensure you follow the curing instructions on the paint canoften requiring a series of heat cyclesto ensure the finish doesn''t flake off during your first spirited drive.
2. Ensure a Leak-Free Seal
Even with the heavy-duty .350-inch flanges, a proper seal is only as good as the gasket and installation technique. Always use fresh, high-quality exhaust gaskets when installing these J-tubes. We recommend applying a small bead of high-temp copper RTV silicone to both sides of the gasket for added insurance. When tightening the 13mm nuts on the exhaust studs, use a cross-pattern torque sequence to ensure even pressure across the flange. Re-check the torque after your first 50 miles of driving, as the initial heat cycles can cause the hardware to settle.
3. Optimize Slip Joint Alignment
The slip-joint design is a lifesaver for installation, but it requires careful alignment to prevent exhaust leaks at the junction. When fitting these to your performance header, ensure the slip joint is seated deeply enough to provide a secure connection but leaves enough room for thermal expansion. If you find the fit is slightly loose, a high-quality stainless steel exhaust clamp can be used to secure the joint. For a permanent, race-ready setup, some builders prefer to use small "tabs" and springs to hold the slip joint together, allowing for movement without the risk of the pipes backing out under high vibration.
