OVERVIEW
When you''re building a Baja Bug or a rugged off-road rail, your exhaust isn''t just about soundit''s about survival and performance in the harshest environments. The EMPI Baja Exhaust Header with a 1-1/2 inch diameter is the industry standard for enthusiasts who demand a high-clearance, high-flow solution for their air-cooled Volkswagen Type 1 engine. This header is designed to tuck up high and out of harm''s way, ensuring that your ground clearance remains uncompromised when navigating rocky trails or deep sand dunes. The 3-bolt flange configuration offers a rock-solid mounting point for a variety of mufflers, glasspacks, or the classic off-road stinger, giving you the modular flexibility to tune your exhaust note and backpressure to your specific engine build. Whether you are running a stock 1600cc or a peppy 1915cc weekend warrior, this header provides the flow necessary to let your engine breathe without sacrificing the low-end torque required for technical off-road maneuvers.
This specific model is delivered in a raw steel finish, which is the preferred choice for builders who want to customize their final look. It is important to understand that the thin black coating applied at the factory is strictly for rust prevention during shipping and storage; it is not a high-heat finish and will burn off during your first heat cycle. By purchasing the raw version, you have the perfect canvas to apply your own high-temperature ceramic coating, header wrap, or specialized VHT paint to match your vehicle''s aesthetic. Each unit is precision jig-welded to ensure a consistent fit across the cylinder heads and heat riser/J-tube connections. This header is designed to bolt directly to factory-style heater boxes or J-tubes, making it a versatile component for both "street-legal" Bajas that need cabin heat and dedicated dirt-only machines that prioritize weight savings and simplicity.

PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP
Tip 1: Proper Surface Preparation is Critical
Don''t make the mistake of bolting this header on straight out of the box. The black paint you see is only there to keep the steel from rusting on the shelf at the warehouse. If you don''t strip it, it will smoke, peel, and smell terrible within the first five minutes of engine operation. We highly recommend using a chemical stripper or a light sandblast to take it down to bare metal. Once cleaned, apply a high-quality, high-heat header paint (rated for at least 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit) or send it out for professional ceramic coating. This extra step prevents premature corrosion and keeps your engine bay looking professional for years to come.
Tip 2: Master the 3-Bolt Flange Seal
The 3-bolt flange is excellent for a secure connection, but it can be prone to "flange walk" if not tightened correctly. Always use a fresh, high-quality composite or copper gasket between the header and your muffler or stinger. When installing, start all three bolts by hand and tighten them in a circular pattern in small increments. This ensures even pressure across the gasket surface. Pro tip: Use copper anti-seize on the bolt threads. Because this exhaust is exposed to the elements in off-road environments, the heat cycles can "weld" the bolts in place over time; anti-seize makes future muffler swaps or engine maintenance significantly easier.
Tip 3: Check Your Valve Cover Clearance
Because the 1-1/2 inch tubing is slightly larger than stock, and the Baja design pulls the pipes closer to the engine for ground clearance, things can get tight. Before you head out for a long desert run, ensure there is adequate clearance between the header pipes and your valve covers. If you are running aftermarket "bolt-on" aluminum valve covers, they tend to be wider than stock stamped steel covers. You want at least a 1/4 inch gap to prevent heat soak into the heads and to ensure you can still remove the valve covers for rocker arm adjustments without having to drop the entire exhaust system. If it''s too tight, a slight adjustment of the J-tubes or heater boxes can usually provide the necessary wiggle room.
