Ignition Points - For Bosch Distributors (Replacement 01009)
Restore the crisp, reliable spark of your air-cooled engine with these premium Ignition Points from Appletree Auto. Designed as a direct replacement for the standard 01009 style points found in many Bosch distributors, these points are critical for maintaining proper ignition timing and engine efficiency. Over time, point contacts can become pitted or burned, leading to misfires, difficult starting, and poor fuel economy. Replacing them with this high-quality set ensures that your electrical circuit breaks cleanly, allowing your coil to build a powerful charge for every stroke.
Constructed with durable contact surfaces and a high-strength spring, these points are engineered to withstand the heat and constant motion of the internal distributor environment. They provide the "set-it-and-forget-it" reliability that classic Volkswagen enthusiasts demand. Whether you are performing a seasonal tune-up on a vintage Beetle or prepping a Sand Rail for the desert, Appletree Auto provides the essential ignition components needed to keep your vintage VW running strong.
Product Fitment & Compatibility
These ignition points fit most Bosch vacuum-advance and centrifugal-advance distributors used on Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 air-cooled engines. Please verify your distributor part number before ordering.

Tech Tips & Installation Advice
- Proper Gapping: Use a clean feeler gauge to set the point gap to the factory specification (usually .016" or 0.4mm) when the distributor cam is at its highest point (fully open). An incorrect gap will change your ignition timing and dwell angle, affecting performance across the entire RPM range.
- Lubricate the Cam: When installing new points, apply a very small dab of high-temperature distributor cam grease to the rubbing block. This prevents the block from wearing down prematurely, which would cause the gap to close up and eventually lead to engine failure.
- Clean the Contacts: Before installation, it is a good practice to pull a clean piece of cardstock or a business card through the closed points to remove any protective oils or residue from the manufacturing process. Clean contacts are essential for a strong electrical path.
- The Condenser Rule: We highly recommend replacing your ignition condenser at the same time you replace your points. A failing condenser is often the root cause of "burned" or pitted points, as it fails to absorb the electrical surge when the contacts open.
- Dwell vs. Gap: If you have access to a dwell meter, it is the most accurate way to set your points. Setting the dwell (typically 44° to 50° for a 4-cylinder VW) is more precise than measuring the physical gap with a feeler gauge, as it accounts for any wear on the distributor cam lobes.
