1. Inspect for Carbon Tracking and Burn Marks
Every time you perform an oil change or a valve adjustment, take a moment to pop the distributor cap and look at the rotor. If you see black, web-like lines on the plastic body (known as carbon tracking) or significant pitting on the brass tip, it is time for a replacement. Carbon tracking allows the spark to "leak" to the distributor shaft instead of reaching the spark plug wire, which causes an immediate loss of power and poor fuel economy. 2. Always Pair with a New Distributor Cap

Never force the rotor down; if it doesn''t slide on smoothly, check for debris or burrs on the shaft. Once it is seated, give it a slight wiggle to ensure it is locked into the notch. If the rotor is loose or incorrectly seated, it can strike the distributor cap terminals, causing catastrophic damage to the distributor internals and leaving you stranded on the side of the road.
