OVERVIEW
If you''re running the legendary 009 centrifugal advance distributor, you know that consistent spark delivery is the lifeblood of your air-cooled engine''s performance. Over time, the internal terminals of your distributor cap succumb to the relentless environment of heat, vibration, and high-voltage electrical arcing, leading to carbon tracking and inevitable misfires. This EMPI distributor cap is engineered specifically to meet the demands of the classic 009 and EMPI-branded distributors, providing a precise fit that seals out moisture and debris while ensuring that every volt from your coil reaches the spark plug wires without interference. Whether you are daily driving a classic Beetle or pushing a high-compression sand rail through the dunes, maintaining a fresh cap is the simplest way to prevent "phantom" ignition issues that can ruin a weekend of driving.
Precision-molded from high-dielectric materials, this distributor cap is designed to withstand the extreme electrical pressures of high-output ignition systems. The internal contacts are manufactured to tight tolerances to ensure the rotor gap remains consistent, which is critical for maintaining timing accuracy across the entire RPM range. Many enthusiasts overlook the distributor cap until the engine starts stumbling under load, but as air-cooled specialists, we recommend replacing this component as part of your regular seasonal tune-up. This cap isn''t just a replacement part; it''s an insurance policy for your ignition system, designed to work seamlessly with both traditional points-and-condenser setups and modern electronic ignition modules. By choosing this EMPI unit, you are investing in a proven design that has powered millions of Volkswagens across the globe.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Prevent Corrosion with Dielectric Grease
When installing your new distributor cap, apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the spark plug wire boots before seating them onto the cap terminals. This simple step serves two purposes: it prevents moisture from entering the connection pointswhich is vital for off-roaders and beach buggiesand it stops the rubber boots from heat-bonding to the cap. This ensures that the next time you need to perform a tune-up, the wires will pull off cleanly without damaging the delicate metal clips inside the plug wires.
Tip 2: Identify Carbon Tracking Early
During your regular oil changes, take a moment to pop the clips and look inside the distributor cap. You are looking for "carbon tracking," which appears as tiny, faint black spiderweb lines etched into the plastic. These lines are actually conductive paths where electricity has jumped from the center terminal to the ground or between spark plug terminals. If you see these marks, replace the cap immediately, even if the engine seems to be running fine. Carbon tracking is a progressive failure that will eventually cause a dead misfire, usually at the worst possible time.
Tip 3: Master the Firing Order
If you are replacing the cap and don''t have the wires marked, remember the golden rule of the air-cooled VW firing order: 1-4-3-2. On a standard 009 distributor, the number one cylinder terminal is typically located at the 5 o''clock or 7 o''clock position depending on how your drive gear was installed. Look for a small notch on the rim of the distributor bodythat notch indicates where the rotor points when cylinder number one is at Top Dead Center (TDC). Start there and follow the clockwise rotation to ensure your wires are in the correct sequence; getting this wrong can lead to backfiring and potential damage to your muffler or intake system.
