OVERVIEW
When it comes to the heart of your air-cooled engine, there is no substitute for the reliability and precision of a fresh 1600cc top-end rebuild. This AA Pistons 85.5mm x 69mm Piston and Cylinder Kit is the industry standard for Volkswagen enthusiasts looking to restore their Type 1, 2, or 3 engines to their original glory. These cast piston kits are engineered to meet or exceed OEM specifications, providing a perfect "slip-in" installation that requires no machine work on your engine case or cylinder heads. Whether you are daily driving a classic Beetle or cruising in a vintage Bus, this kit offers the ideal balance of thermal stability and longevity. The cast aluminum alloy pistons are designed to handle the heat cycles of an air-cooled environment, ensuring that your engine stays tight and efficient for thousands of miles to come.
The beauty of the 85.5mm bore lies in its simplicity and proven performance history. Unlike larger big-bore kits that may require clearancing or heavy modifications, this 1600cc kit is a direct replacement for the standard Volkswagen power plant. Each set comes complete with four precision-honed cast iron cylinders, four cast pistons, a high-quality ring set, wrist pins, and circlips. By choosing a cast piston over a forged alternative for your street engine, you benefit from tighter piston-to-cylinder clearances, which results in a quieter engine during cold starts and reduced oil consumption over the life of the motor. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that your VW is more than just a carit is a passionand this AA Pistons kit is the foundation you need for a dependable, smooth-running air-cooled experience.

PRO TIPS
Pro Tip 1: Cleanliness is Key. Before you even think about sliding those pistons into the barrels, you must thoroughly clean the cylinders. AA Pistons ships these with a heavy anti-corrosion shipping oil (cosmoline) to prevent rust while they are on the shelf. Use hot soapy water and a lint-free cloth to scrub the bores until the cloth comes out perfectly white. Once cleaned, immediately dry them and apply a light coat of fresh engine oil or assembly lube to the cylinder walls to prevent flash rusting. If you don''t remove that shipping oil, it can glaze over during the first heat cycle and prevent your rings from seating properly.
Pro Tip 2: Check Your Ring Gaps. Never assume that piston rings are "drop-in" ready right out of the box. Even with high-quality kits, it is vital to "end-gap" your rings. Place each ring into the cylinder it will be used in, use a piston to push it down about an inch so it is level, and use a feeler gauge to check the gap. For a standard 1600cc street engine, you are typically looking for a gap of .012" to .016" on the top ring. If the gap is too tight, the ring ends can touch as they expand from heat, which can lead to catastrophic engine failure or broken ring lands.
Pro Tip 3: Mind the Orientation. When installing the pistons onto the connecting rods, pay close attention to the markings on the piston crown. Most cast pistons will have an arrow or a small "offset" notch. The arrow should always point toward the flywheel (the front of the engine in a VW). This is because the wrist pin is slightly offset to reduce "piston slap" and engine noise as the piston transitions at top dead center. Installing them backward won''t necessarily cause immediate failure, but it will result in a much noisier engine and premature wear on the cylinder walls and piston skirts.
