OVERVIEW
When it comes to extracting maximum horsepower and aggressive torque from your air-cooled Volkswagen engine, the Engle FK-44 Camshaft stands as a legendary choice among professional engine builders and weekend racers alike. Engineered specifically for high-performance off-road and drag racing applications, this camshaft is part of Engle''s famous FK-series, designed to be used with high-ratio rockers to achieve massive valve lift. The FK-44 profile provides a brutal mid-to-high RPM power band that is essential for clearing sand dunes or tearing down the drag strip. By utilizing a billet steel construction, Engle ensures that this cam can withstand the immense pressures of dual valve springs and high-lift valve train geometry without sacrificing the structural integrity your performance build demands.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that a camshaft is the "brain" of your engine, and the FK-44 is built for those who demand no-compromise performance. This cam features an advertised duration of 287 degrees and a lobe center of 108, providing the perfect overlap for high-flow cylinder heads to breathe efficiently at high engine speeds. Because this is a high-lift profile, it requires the use of 1.4:1 or 1.5:1 ratio rockers to reach its full potential of .547 inches of lift. Whether you are building a 2110cc monster or a high-revving 2332cc drag engine, the Engle FK-44 delivers the competitive edge needed to dominate the competition. Please note that this camshaft requires a 3-bolt gear and must be installed with brand new lifters to ensure proper break-in and longevity.
FITMENT
This Engle FK-44 Camshaft is designed for performance Type 1, 2, and 3 air-cooled Volkswagen engines. While it fits the standard cam bore of the VW case, it is a high-performance part that requires specific valve train components and clearancing in most applications.

PRO TIPS
1. Prioritize a Precise Break-In Procedure
The first 20 minutes of your engine''s life are critical for the survival of the Engle FK-44. Because this is a flat-tappet camshaft, you must use a high-quality break-in oil with high levels of ZDP (Zinc and Phosphorus) or a dedicated zinc additive. Upon the initial fire-up, immediately bring the engine speed between 2,000 and 2,500 RPM and maintain that range for 20 minutes. Do not let the engine idle during this time, as idling does not provide enough splash lubrication from the crankshaft to properly season the cam lobes and lifter faces. Failing to follow this procedure can lead to "wiped" lobes and permanent engine damage.
2. Verify Valve Train Clearance and Geometry
With a massive .547 inches of lift, the FK-44 pushes the limits of standard VW engine architecture. It is absolutely mandatory to check for "coil bind" on your valve springs and to ensure there is adequate clearance between the valve spring retainer and the valve stem seal or guide. Additionally, you must check the clearance between the rocker arm and the valve cover, as well as the pushrod tubes. Proper valve train geometry is essential not just for power, but for the longevity of your valve guides; ensure your rocker arm geometry is centered at half-lift to prevent side-loading the valves.
3. Match Your Compression and Gearing
The Engle FK-44 is an aggressive camshaft that shifts the power band higher into the RPM range. To make the most of this profile, your engine should generally have a higher static compression ratio (often 9.5:1 or higher depending on fuel and application) to compensate for the late intake valve closing. Furthermore, ensure your transaxle gearing is matched to this power band. If your gears are too "tall," you may find the engine "bogging" before it reaches the "sweet spot" of the cam. This camshaft thrives when paired with close-ratio gears and high-flow cylinder heads that can keep up with its high-lift demands.
