FITMENT
These intake gaskets are designed specifically for use with BUGPACK Super Flo Cylinder Heads. They will not fit standard dual-port or single-port Type 1 heads. Fitment includes the following applications when equipped with Super Flo heads:
- Volkswagen Beetle: 1950 through 1979 (Type 1 Engines)
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1974
- Volkswagen Bus / Transporter: 1950 through 1971 (Type 1 Engines)

PRO TIPS
1. Perform a Dry Port Alignment Check
Before you apply any sealant or final torque, place the gasket onto the cylinder head intake studs and then set your intake manifold on top. Peer down through the manifold (if possible) or use a mechanics mirror to ensure that the gasket is not protruding into the intake path. While these are precision-cut for Super Flo heads, some builders perform custom port-matching or "hogging out" of the manifolds. If the gasket material is visible in the port, use a sharp hobby knife to trim it back so it does not create turbulence in the high-velocity air stream. A clean, unobstructed path is vital for the "Super Flo" name to live up to its reputation.
2. Avoid Excessive RTV Silicone
One of the most common mistakes in air-cooled VW assembly is the over-application of RTV silicone on intake gaskets. Excessive silicone can squeeze out into the intake port, harden, and eventually break off, potentially getting sucked into the combustion chamber. For the best results with these composite gaskets, we recommend installing them completely dry if the mating surfaces are freshly machined and flat. If you feel a sealant is necessary due to minor surface imperfections, use a very light "tack" spray, such as a copper gasket adhesive, which provides a tacky seal without the risk of globbing or internal port contamination.
3. Torque in Incremental Stages
The intake manifolds on a Type 1 engine are often made of aluminum, which can warp or crack if the mounting nuts are tightened unevenly. When installing your manifolds over these BUGPACK gaskets, tighten the 13mm nuts in stages. Start by snugging them all down by hand, then use a wrench to tighten them in a cross-pattern to roughly 10 ft-lbs, and finally finish at the factory specification (usually around 14-18 ft-lbs depending on your stud size). This ensures the gasket is compressed evenly across the entire surface area, creating a robust seal that won''t develop a vacuum leak after the first few heat cycles of the engine.
