OVERVIEW
Unlock the true potential of your air-cooled engine with the AA Performance Dual 40 IDF Style Carburetor Kit. Designed for the VW enthusiast who demands both reliability and a significant boost in throttle response, this kit is a faithful and high-quality evolution of the classic Weber IDF design. Whether you are cruising the strip or navigating canyon roads, these dual 40mm carburetors provide the precise fuel atomization and increased airflow necessary to wake up your Type 1 dual-port engine. By moving to a dual-carburetor setup, you eliminate the inherent "flat spots" and distribution issues found in single center-mount systems, ensuring each cylinder receives a perfectly balanced charge for smoother idling and aggressive acceleration. This kit isn''t just about speed; it''s about providing your vintage Volkswagen with a modern level of drivability and performance that stock components simply cannot match.
Engineering excellence is at the heart of this AA Performance kit. One of the standout features is the inclusion of specially cast offset intake manifolds. Unlike standard straight manifolds that can lead to clearance issues against the engine firewalls or shroud, these offset units align the carburetors straight across the engine. This design provides significantly more working room for adjustments and prevents the common headache of carburetors knocking against the body of your Beetle or Ghia. The manifolds are cast with extra-thick walls, allowing performance builders the freedom to port-match them to high-flow cylinder heads without compromising structural integrity. Combined with a robust hex-bar linkage system that ensures synchronized throttle opening and stamped steel air cleaners for a professional, finished look, this kit represents the ultimate balance of form and function for the serious VW builder.

PRO TIPS
1. Master the Art of Synchronization
To get the most out of your Dual 40 IDF kit, you must ensure both carburetors are pulling the exact same amount of air at idle. We highly recommend using a high-quality airflow meter (often called a Uni-Syn or Snail-type sync tool) during the installation process. Don''t rely on just your ears or the linkage arm length. Adjust the idle bypass screws and the linkage rods until both sides show identical readings on your meter. Perfectly synchronized carbs are the difference between an engine that shakes at stoplights and one that hums with sewing-machine precision. If you skip this step, you''ll likely experience "popping" through the intake or an uneven idle that makes the car difficult to drive.
2. Never Over-Pressure the Needle and Seat
IDF style carburetors are notoriously sensitive to fuel pressure. Most stock VW mechanical pumps or high-volume electric pumps can put out 5 to 7 PSI, which is far too much for the needle and seat in these units. Excessive pressure will "blow past" the needle, causing the bowls to overflow, leading to flooding, poor fuel economy, and potential engine fire hazards. Always install a high-quality fuel pressure regulator and set it strictly between 3.0 and 3.5 PSI. This ensures a consistent fuel level in the bowls, allowing the internal jets to function exactly as they were engineered to do, providing a crisp and reliable throttle response across the entire RPM range.
3. Optimize with Port Matching
The manifolds included in this AA Performance kit are intentionally cast with extra-thick material. This is a "builder''s secret" that allows you to significantly increase power if you are running performance cylinder heads. Take the time to match the bottom of the intake manifold to the intake ports on your heads. By removing any "steps" or transitions where the manifold meets the head, you eliminate turbulence and significantly increase the velocity of the air-fuel mixture. Even on a daily driver, this simple bit of "cleanup" work can improve torque and make the engine feel much more responsive. Just be sure to thoroughly clean out all aluminum shavings before final installation to prevent engine damage.
