OVERVIEW
Upgrading your classic Volkswagen Beetle from outdated, fading drum brakes to a modern disc brake system is one of the single most important safety and performance improvements you can make. This EMPI Disc Brake Installation Kit serves as the critical bridge between your new high-performance rotors and your existing ball joint spindles. Whether you are building a weekend cruiser, a daily driver, or a high-performance street machine, ensuring your front rotating assembly is supported by fresh, high-quality bearings is non-negotiable. This kit eliminates the guesswork and the frustration of hunting down individual components at a local parts store, providing a matched set of inner and outer bearings along with precision-molded grease seals to ensure a leak-free, smooth-rolling front end that can handle the heat and friction of modern stopping power.
Precision is the name of the game when it comes to front-end geometry and braking reliability. Reusing old, heat-cycled, or contaminated bearings on a brand-new disc brake conversion is a recipe for premature failure, hub wobble, and inconsistent braking feel. This 6-piece kit from EMPI is specifically engineered for 1966 through 1974 Ball Joint Beetles and Karmann Ghias, offering the exact tolerances required for a perfect fit on factory spindles or aftermarket drop spindles. By installing all-new hardware from Appletree Automotive, you are protecting your investment in your disc brake rotors and ensuring that your VW handles with the crispness and predictability that only a properly maintained air-cooled front end can provide. Don''t let a five-dollar old bearing ruin a five-hundred-dollar brake job; do it once and do it right with this comprehensive installation kit.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Bearing Packing is Paramount
One of the most common mistakes in VW brake assembly is "smearing" grease on the outside of the bearing and calling it good. To ensure these bearings last for tens of thousands of miles, you must "pack" them. This involves placing a glob of high-quality, high-temperature disc brake grease in the palm of your hand and repeatedly driving the wide end of the bearing into the grease until it squirts out through the rollers at the top. If you don''t see grease coming through the small end, there is air inside, and the bearing will overheat and seize. For the best results, use a dedicated bearing packer tool available here at Appletree Auto.
2. Seat Your Seals with Care
When installing the new grease seals into the back of your rotors, never use a hammer directly on the seal surface. This can distort the metal casing or tear the rubber lip, leading to grease leaking onto your brand-new brake pads. Instead, use a seal driver tool or a large socket that matches the outer diameter of the seal. Ensure the seal is driven in perfectly flush with the rotor surface. Additionally, apply a very light film of grease to the rubber lip of the seal before sliding the rotor onto the spindle; this prevents "dry start" friction from tearing the seal during the first few miles of driving.
3. The "Wiggle" Method for Spindle Nut Tension
Setting the bearing preload is a "Goldilocks" proceduretoo tight and the bearings burn up; too loose and you get brake pedal pulsation and uneven tire wear. After installing the rotor and outer bearing, tighten the spindle nut while spinning the rotor until it stops, then back it off about a quarter turn. The "old school" specialist trick is to use a flat-head screwdriver to move the thrust washer behind the nut. You should be able to move the washer back and forth with firm finger pressure on the screwdriver, but it shouldn''t be loose enough to rattle. Once you hit that sweet spot, lock your pinch nut or cotter pin immediately.
