PRO TIPS
1. Proper Torque and Sequence
Always tighten your pressure plate bolts in a star pattern (cross-pattern) to ensure even pressure is applied across the clutch disc. For most air-cooled VW applications, these Grade 8 bolts should be torqued to 18 ft-lbs. Failing to use a torque wrench or tightening them in a circular pattern can warp the pressure plate or cause the clutch to chatter. Double-checking your torque settings ensures that the wavy washers are properly compressed to lock the bolts in place, preventing them from backing out due to engine vibration.
2. Clean the Friction Surfaces
Before you bolt the pressure plate down using your new EMPI hardware, use a high-quality brake cleaner to wipe down the friction surfaces of both the flywheel and the new pressure plate. Manufacturers often coat these parts in a thin layer of shipping oil to prevent rust while they sit on the shelf. If this oil isn''t removed, it will contaminate your new clutch disc immediately upon startup, leading to slippage and premature wear. A clean surface is just as important as the hardware holding it all together.
3. Maintain Tool Alignment
Keep the plastic alignment tool inserted through the clutch disc and into the crankshaft pilot bearing (or gland nut) until the pressure plate bolts are snug. If you remove the tool before the pressure plate is tight, the weight of the clutch disc can cause it to sag slightly. Even a fraction of a millimeter of misalignment will make it nearly impossible to slide the engine onto the transmission input shaft. Leave the tool in place until the final torque sequence is complete to ensure a "one-shot" engine installation.
