1. Thoroughly Clean the Shipping Preservative
New cylinders are shipped with a thick, waxy anti-corrosion coating often referred to as "cosmoline" to prevent rusting during transit and storage. You must never install these straight out of the box. Use a high-quality brake cleaner or a hot soapy water bath followed by a lint-free cloth to scrub the cylinder bores until they are spotless. If you leave this residue on the walls, it will gum up your new piston rings and prevent them from seating properly, leading to oil consumption and premature engine failure. Once cleaned, apply a very light coat of fresh engine oil to the bores to prevent flash rusting before assembly.
2. Verify Your Ring Gap and Orientation
Even though this is a matched kit, a master builder always verifies the piston ring end gap before final installation. Insert each ring into the cylinder and use the piston to square it up, then measure the gap with a feeler gauge according to the manufacturer''s specifications. When it comes time to install the pistons into the cylinders, ensure the ring gaps are staggered 120 degrees apart from one another. Never align the ring gaps with the wrist pin or with each other, as this creates a direct path for combustion gases to escape into the crankcase, commonly known as "blow-by," which will kill your engine''s efficiency and power.
