        1. The Art of Hand-Packing Bearings

        To ensure maximum longevity, you must do more than just smear grease on the outside of the bearing. The "palm-packing" method is the gold standard for air-cooled VW specialists. Place a large dollop of the Allstar Performance grease in the palm of your clean hand. Take the bearing and firmly "slap" the wide edge of the cage into the grease, forcing the lubricant through the rollers until it oozes out of the top. Rotate the bearing and repeat this process until the entire internal cavity of the bearing is saturated. This eliminates "dry spots" that can lead to immediate heat scarring the moment you drive away from the shop. Don''t rush this process; a properly packed bearing can last for decades with minimal maintenance.

        2. Avoid Cross-Contamination

        One of the most common mistakes when servicing VW wheel bearings is mixing different types of grease. If you are switching to this high-performance synthetic Allstar grease, it is imperative that you completely strip all old, petroleum-based grease from the hub, spindle, and bearing surfaces. Use a high-quality parts cleaner or solvent to remove every trace of the old lubricant. Mixing synthetic and conventional greases can cause a chemical reaction that leads to the grease breaking down and losing its lubricating properties. Once the parts are clean and dry, apply a thin film of the new grease to the spindle surface to prevent surface rust before installing your freshly packed bearings.

        3. Manage the Hub Cavity Volume

        While it is tempting to pack the entire hollow center of the brake drum or rotor hub with grease, this can actually lead to overheating. You want to pack the bearings fully and apply a generous coating to the races, but the center cavity of the hub should only be filled to about 50% to 60% capacity. This allows for thermal expansion as the hub heats up during braking. If the hub is packed 100% solid, the pressure from heat expansion can force grease past the inner wheel seal and onto your brake shoes or pads, which will significantly compromise your stopping power. Always ensure your grease cap is clean and has a small amount of grease inside it to protect the outer spindle nut and cotter pin from moisture.
