PRO TIPS
1. Bypassing the External Regulator
When switching from a factory generator to this internally regulated alternator, you MUST bypass your old external voltage regulator usually located under the rear seat or on the firewall. If you leave the old regulator in the circuit, you risk "cooking" the new alternator''s internal diodes or causing a total charging failure. You will typically connect the large B+ wire directly to the battery circuit and the smaller D+ wire to your dash charging light. Always use high-quality 10-gauge or 8-gauge wire for the main charging lead to handle the full 75-amp potential without voltage drop or heat buildup.
2. Perfect Pulley Alignment and Shimming
Belt alignment is critical for the longevity of your alternator''s front bearing and the belt itself. When installing the chrome pulley provided in the kit, use the included shims to align the alternator pulley perfectly with the crank pulley. If the belt is "walking" or twisting, it will create excessive heat and eventually snap or damage the chrome finish on the pulley. Ensure you have at least 1/2 inch of "play" or deflection in the belt when pressed with your thumb; a belt that is too tight will put an immense side-load on the alternator shaft, leading to premature bearing failure.
3. Don''t Forget the Woodruf Key and Torque
One of the most common installation errors we see is the loss of the small Woodruf key that locks the pulley to the alternator shaft. Before sliding the pulley on, ensure the key is seated firmly in the shaft groove. Once the pulley is on, torque the 21mm nut to approximately 40-45 ft-lbs. If this nut is loose, the pulley will spin on the shaft, ruining both the chrome pulley and the alternator shaft in seconds. We recommend using a small drop of blue (medium strength) thread locker on the alternator nut to ensure it stays put through thousands of heat cycles.
