OVERVIEW
When it comes to customizing your air-cooled Volkswagen, the wheels are often the first place enthusiasts look to make a statement. However, a common hurdle arises when you want to run high-performance American-style wheels, such as Centerlines, Weld Racing, or various sand rail wheels, which typically utilize 7/16-inch lug hardware. Historically, this meant sending your drums or rotors to a machine shop to be drilled and tapped for larger studs, an expensive and time-consuming process that leaves little room for error. These EMPI 12mm to 7/16-inch conversion wheel studs provide the ultimate "bolt-on" solution, allowing you to bridge the gap between German engineering and American wheel styling without any permanent modifications to your braking components.
Crafted from high-tensile strength steel, these conversion studs are designed to handle the rigors of both street performance and off-road abuse. By featuring a metric M12-1.5 thread on the "inboard" side and a standard 7/16-inch thread on the "outboard" side, they allow you to utilize readily available 7/16-inch lug nuts which are often preferred for their robustness and variety of styles. Whether you are building a show-stopping Cal-Look Beetle, a rugged Baja Bug, or a high-speed sand rail, these studs ensure your wheels stay securely fastened while providing the clearance and fitment needed for specialized racing wheels. This 5-pack provides enough hardware for one complete wheel, ensuring a consistent and professional installation every time you hit the pavement or the dunes.
FITMENT
These conversion studs are designed for Volkswagen applications utilizing the standard 4x130mm bolt pattern or any aftermarket drum/rotor tapped for M12-1.5 threads. Standard fitment includes:
- Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle: 1968 through 1977 (Standard and Super Beetle)
- Volkswagen Type 14 Karmann Ghia: 1967 through 1974
- Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1966 through 1973
- Volkswagen Thing (Type 181): 1973 through 1974
- Custom Applications: Any Dune Buggy, Sand Rail, or Trike utilizing VW 4-lug disc or drum brake components.
- Note: Does NOT fit early 5-lug (5x205) applications which use M14 threads unless they have been specifically redrilled for M12 hardware.

PRO TIPS
1. Permanent Stud Seating is Crucial
When installing these studs into your drums or rotors, it is imperative to use a high-strength thread-locking compound, such as Red Loctite, on the M12-1.5 metric side. Because these are screw-in studs rather than press-in studs, the friction of removing a lug nut can sometimes cause the stud to back out of the drum instead of the nut coming off the stud. By cleaning the internal threads of your drum thoroughly with brake cleaner and applying a permanent locker, you ensure the stud stays exactly where it belongs during tire changes or roadside repairs. Don''t skip this step, or you''ll find yourself struggling with a spinning stud at the most inconvenient time.
2. Verify Lug Nut Seat Compatibility
Even though you are switching to a 7/16-inch thread, the seat of the lug nut must still match the "pocket" of the wheel you are installing. Most American-style wheels that use 7/16-inch hardware require a 60-degree tapered (conical) seat, but some specialty mag wheels may require a shank-style nut with a washer. Always test-fit the lug nut into the wheel before tightening it onto the stud to ensure full contact and proper centering. Improperly matched seats can lead to wheels loosening over time or even damaging the wheel center, which is a major safety hazard on both the street and the trail.
3. Proper Torque and Bottoming Out
When threading these into your cast iron drums, ensure the stud bottoms out completely against the shoulder of the thread. If the stud isn''t fully seated, it can "creep" further in under the load of the lug nut, causing the wheel to become loose even if the nut felt tight initially. Use a "double nut" technique (threading two 7/16-inch nuts against each other) to firmly seat the stud into the drum before you ever put the wheel on. Finally, always use a torque wrench to tighten your lug nuts to the wheel manufacturer''s specifications; over-tightening can stretch the 7/16-inch threads, while under-tightening is a recipe for disaster. It''s always better to be precise when your safety is on the line.
