OVERVIEW
When you are split-case deep into a transmission rebuild or simply trying to restore that factory-crisp clutch feel to your vintage Volkswagen, the throw-out arm assembly is often the most overlooked component. Over decades of operation, the original factory shaft and arm assembly endure thousands of heat cycles and constant friction, leading to wallowed-out bushing surfaces and hairline fractures in the arm itself. This IAP Throw Out Arm Repair Kit is the definitive solution for air-cooled enthusiasts who refuse to settle for sloppy pedal travel or inconsistent clutch engagement. We have engineered this kit to provide a complete overhaul of the release mechanism, ensuring that every millimeter of cable pull is translated directly into smooth, linear pressure against the pressure plate. By replacing the entire assembly rather than just patching individual components, you eliminate the "ghost" vibrations and grinding noises that often plague older Type 1 and Type 2 transaxles.
Precision-machined to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, this kit is specifically designed for the "early style" 200mm clutch systems found in vehicles produced through 1970. It features a high-tensile steel shaft that resists the twisting forces common in high-performance or heavy-duty street applications. Whether you are piloting a restored weekend cruiser, a rugged off-road dune buggy, or a classic split-window bus, the integrity of your clutch release system is paramount to the longevity of your synchronized gears. This kit includes the operating shaft, the heavy-duty release arm, high-quality bushings, and the necessary return springs to ensure your throw-out bearing retracts fully every time you lift your foot. Don''t risk a catastrophic failure on the road by reusing a 50-year-old fatigued arm; upgrade to a fresh, robust assembly from Appletree Automotive and feel the difference in every shift.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Bushing Installation is Key
When you are removing the old bushings from the transaxle case, be extremely careful not to score the aluminum or magnesium housing. We recommend using a dedicated bushing driver or a socket that perfectly matches the outer diameter of the bushing to press the new ones in. If the fit feels loose due to decades of wear on the case itself, a small amount of green sleeve retainer (Loctite) can help keep the bushings seated. Always ensure the oil holes (if applicable) or relief grooves are aligned to allow for proper movement and any incidental lubrication that might occur during assembly.
2. Lubrication Without Contamination
While it is tempting to pack the shaft with grease, you must be surgical in your application. Use a high-quality, high-temperature urea-based or synthetic grease on the bushing surfaces and the pivot points where the arm meets the shaft. However, avoid over-applying grease to the "ears" where the throw-out bearing clips on. Excess grease can migrate onto the clutch disc or the pressure plate face as the shaft rotates, leading to clutch chatter or premature slippage. A thin, translucent film is all that is required for a smooth, bind-free operation.
3. Check the Throw-Out Bearing Clips
Since this kit is designed for the pre-1971 "early style" system, the throw-out bearing is held onto the shaft by two metal clips. Always inspect these clips for tension. If they are stretched or weak, the bearing can "cock" sideways, leading to uneven wear on the pressure plate''s center ring and eventually causing a "whirring" noise when the clutch is depressed. When you install this new shaft, make sure the ears are perfectly parallel and that the bearing moves freely back and forth on the input shaft sleeve without catching. This ensures that the pressure applied to the clutch is perfectly centered every time.
