OVERVIEW
Upgrade your air-cooled Volkswagen''s front-end stability and aesthetic appeal with the EMPI Billet Aluminum Steering Damper Bracket. For decades, VW enthusiasts have struggled with the original, stamped-steel brackets that are notorious for rusting, bending, or requiring tedious welding to the axle beam. This precision-machined billet aluminum clamp-on bracket eliminates those headaches entirely, providing a rock-solid mounting point for your steering damper without the need for a welder. Whether you are building a show-stopping California Look Beetle or a rugged off-road Baja Bug, this bracket offers the perfect blend of high-tech manufacturing and old-school reliability. It is designed to clamp securely around a 2-inch diameter beam tube, making it an essential component for anyone upgrading to an aftermarket beam or simply replacing a failed factory mount.
Beyond its striking appearance, the EMPI AC750103 bracket is engineered for performance. Steering shimmy and front-end vibrations are common issues in vintage Volkswagens, often exacerbated by loose or failing damper mounts. By utilizing a high-tensile billet aluminum construction, this bracket provides a much more rigid connection than the stock thin-gauge steel versions. This rigidity ensures that your steering damper can work at maximum efficiency, absorbing road shocks and preventing the dreaded "death wobble" often found in aging front ends. At Appletree Auto, we know that every detail matters in a restoration or custom build; this bracket not only cleans up the look of your front suspension but also provides the peace of mind that comes with modern, CNC-machined durability. It''s an easy, bolt-on solution that represents a significant upgrade over the 1960s-era technology it replaces.

PRO TIPS
1. Surface Preparation for Maximum Grip
To ensure that the bracket does not rotate or slide along the beam tube under heavy steering loads, it is critical to properly prep the mounting surface. Before installation, use a fine-grit sandpaper or an abrasive pad to remove any heavy paint, powder coating, or rust from the specific area on the beam where the bracket will sit. Once the metal is clean, wipe it down with a degreaser. This metal-to-metal contact, or contact against a thin, clean layer of paint, allows the billet aluminum to "bite" effectively. If the paint is too thick or "slick," the bracket may migrate over time, which can lead to steering binding or a loss of damping effectiveness.
2. Proper Centering and Travel Clearance
When installing your steering damper, it is vital to ensure the damper is "centered" within its own travel. To do this, turn your steering wheel all the way to the left lock and then all the way to the right lock, counting the total turns. Return the wheel to the exact center point. Position the billet bracket on the beam so that the steering damper is at the midpoint of its stroke. Before tightening the bolts completely, have an assistant turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock while you watch the damper. Ensure that the damper does not bottom out or fully extend before the spindles hit their physical stops. If the damper reaches its limit first, it will eventually snap the bracket or damage the damper internals.
3. Use Anti-Seize and Progressive Torquing
Billet aluminum and steel bolts can sometimes experience galvanic corrosion or "galling" over time, especially in high-moisture environments. We highly recommend applying a small amount of anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the socket head cap screws before installation. When tightening the bracket, do not tighten one bolt all the way down at once. Instead, use a "cross-pattern" or alternate between the bolts, tightening them in small increments. This ensures that the two halves of the bracket remain perfectly parallel and apply even pressure around the circumference of the beam tube. This prevents localized stress points on the aluminum and ensures the most secure fit possible for your VW''s steering system.
