3/16" Ball Joint Connector for Push-Pull Throttle Cables
Ensure smooth, bind-free throttle operation with the 3/16" Ball Joint Connector from Appletree Auto. Specifically engineered for use with performance push-pull cables (such as 33C Morse-style cables), this ball joint provides the flexible mechanical link necessary for precision throttle control. By allowing for a degree of angular misalignment, it prevents the throttle cable from binding or snapping when the engine torques or the linkage moves through its arc, making it a critical component for any custom air-cooled Volkswagen build.
Constructed from high-strength steel with a corrosion-resistant finish, this ball joint is designed to handle the high-vibration environment of a VW engine bay. It features a 10-32 thread size, which is the industry standard for 3/16" cable ends. Whether you are connecting a custom pedal assembly to a single Solex or a complex dual-carburetor linkage on a high-performance Sand Rail, Appletree Auto provides the professional-grade hardware you need for a "set-it-and-forget-it" throttle system.
Product Fitment & Compatibility
This is a universal fabrication component designed for 10-32 threaded push-pull cables. It is commonly used in custom throttle, shift, and heater control applications on Type 1 based vehicles.
- Custom Sand Rails & Dune Buggies: All Years & Models (For push-pull cable linkages)
- Baja Bugs: Ideal for custom carburetor and throttle configurations
- Volkswagen Beetle: Performance builds using Morse-style throttle cables
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: Custom dual-carburetor setups
- Off-Road Racing Chassis: Universal 3/16" cable end applications
Tech Tips & Installation Advice
- Adjust for Full Travel: When threading the ball joint onto your throttle cable, ensure you have enough thread engagement (at least 1.5 times the diameter of the stud) for safety. Adjust the position to ensure the carburetor reaches Wide Open Throttle (WOT) exactly when the gas pedal hits the floor.
- Use a Jam Nut: Always use a thin jam nut (10-32) against the ball joint once your adjustment is set. This prevents the ball joint from vibrating loose or spinning on the cable end, which could lead to a sudden loss of throttle control.
- Lubrication: Periodically apply a drop of light machine oil or a dry PTFE-based lubricant to the ball and socket. This keeps the movement effortless and prevents "stiction," ensuring your throttle returns to idle quickly and consistently.
- Check for Binding: Rotate the linkage through its full range of motion. If the ball joint "bottoms out" in its socket before the linkage hits its stop, you may need to adjust the angle of your mounting bracket to prevent bending the cable end.
- Safety First: In any custom throttle setup, always verify that your return springs are strong enough to overcome the internal friction of the cable and the ball joint. We recommend dual return springs for added security on all off-road and high-performance engines.
