OVERVIEW
When you are pushing the limits of an air-cooled engine, heat is your primary enemy. Standard valves often struggle under the intense thermal loads of high-performance driving, leading to warping or catastrophic failure. That is why we recommend these IAP premium forged one-piece stainless steel valves for any serious engine build. These 37.5mm valves are engineered to withstand the extreme temperatures found in both the intake and exhaust tracts of modified Volkswagen engines. The one-piece forged construction eliminates the weak points found in two-piece welded valves, providing the structural integrity needed for high-RPM applications. Each valve features a precision-machined swirl polish on the head, which significantly reduces turbulence and improves laminar flow, allowing your engine to breathe more efficiently and produce more power across the entire powerband.
Durability is at the heart of this design, and the standout feature is the exclusive alloy hard tip. One of the most common issues with stainless valves is the "mushrooming" of the stem tip caused by constant contact with the rocker arms. These valves solve that problem entirely with a hardened tip that maintains its shape even under the stress of high-lift camshafts and heavy-duty valve springs. Whether you are building a high-revving street car, a rugged off-road rail, or a classic Beetle restoration that needs modern reliability, these 37.5mm stainless valves offer the perfect balance of performance and longevity. Sold individually, they allow you the flexibility to replace a single damaged component or to purchase a full set for a complete cylinder head overhaul. Trust Appletree Automotive to provide the professional-grade components your VW deserves.
FITMENT
These 37.5mm valves are designed for performance applications and will fit a wide range of air-cooled Volkswagen engines, provided the cylinder heads have been machined or are designed for this oversized valve diameter. Standard fitment includes:
- VW Type 1: Beetle, Super Beetle, and Karmann Ghia (1950-1979)
- VW Type 2: Bus, Transporter, and Kombi (1950-1971 with Type 1 style engines)
- VW Type 3: Fastback, Squareback, and Notchback (1961-1973)
- VW Thing: Model 181 (1973-1974)
- Engines: 1600cc, 1776cc, 1835cc, 1914cc, and larger performance stroker builds.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Lap Your Valves for a Perfect Seal
Even though these valves are precision machined, you must never install them without properly lapping them into your valve seats. Using a fine-grit valve grinding compound and a suction-cup lapping tool, work the valve into the seat until you see a consistent, dull gray ring around both the valve face and the seat. This ensures a gas-tight seal, which is critical for maintaining compression and transferring heat from the valve head into the cylinder head casting. If you don''t achieve a perfect seal, you risk "burning" the valve, which can lead to expensive engine damage down the road.
2. Check Your Stem Clearance and Lubrication
When installing these stainless valves, it is imperative to check the clearance between the valve stem and the valve guide. Stainless steel has a different thermal expansion rate than standard steel valves, so ensuring you have the correct "feel" or measurement is vital. Before final assembly, always apply a high-quality assembly lube or moly-based grease to the stems. This provides critical lubrication during the initial startup before the engine''s oiling system has fully pressurized the top end. Running dry valve stems, even for a few seconds, can cause premature wear on the guides.
3. Match Your Springs to Your Camshaft Profile
While these forged stainless valves are incredibly strong, they are only as good as the springs controlling them. If you are using these in a performance build with a high-lift cam, ensure you are using heavy-duty single or dual valve springs that can handle the increased lift without binding. The hardened alloy tip on these valves is designed to handle the extra pressure, but you must ensure your rocker arm geometry is centered on the valve tip. Proper geometry prevents side-loading the valve stem, which protects both the valve guide and the integrity of the valve itself over thousands of miles of hard driving.
