Product Overview
In the world of air-cooled Volkswagens, heat is the ultimate enemy. Maintaining proper thermal management isn''t just about performance; it''s about the survival of your engine. These EMPI Chrome Single Port Cylinder Shrouds are engineered to provide the critical airflow redirection your Type 1 engine needs to stay cool under pressure. Stamped from high-quality steel to mirror the original factory specifications, these "under-cylinder" tins sit snugly between your pushrod tubes and the cylinder fins. By eliminating gaps and forced-air leakage, these shrouds ensure that every cubic foot of air coming from your cooling fan is directed exactly where it needs to go: across the cooling fins to dissipate heat before it can cause catastrophic warping or head failure.
Beyond their vital mechanical function, these cylinder shrouds offer a premium aesthetic upgrade for any enthusiast looking to add some "show" to their "go." The brilliant chrome finish provides a mirror-like shine that transforms a standard engine bay into a show-ready masterpiece. Unlike cheap imitations that suffer from poor fitment and thin plating, these EMPI shrouds are built to withstand the vibrating, high-heat environment of a VW flat-four. Whether you are restoring a vintage Beetle to its former glory or building a custom woods buggy that needs to look as good as it runs, these single port tins provide the perfect balance of industrial-grade cooling and high-end style. They are sold as a complete pair to cover both sides of your engine block, ensuring a uniform look and consistent cooling across all four cylinders.
Vehicle Fitment
These shrouds are designed specifically for Single Port (SP) configurations. Please verify your intake manifold and cylinder head type before ordering. Typical fitment includes:

Pro Tips from the Appletree Garage
1. Ensure a Gap-Free Installation for Maximum Cooling
When installing these chrome tins, it is absolutely vital that they sit flush against the cylinder heads and the case. Even a small 1/8-inch gap can allow pressurized cooling air to escape before it travels through the cylinder fins. If you find a slight interference with your pushrod tubes, don''t be afraid to slightly "massage" the edges of the tin for a perfect seal. Use a small amount of high-temp silicone or foam weather stripping if necessary to ensure that 100% of the air is forced downward. Remember, in an air-cooled VW, air is your coolant; don''t let it leak out!
2. Protect Your Chrome During the Build
Chrome is beautiful, but it can be scratched during the installation process, especially when working around heavy tools and engine stands. I always recommend wrapping these shrouds in blue painter''s tape before you begin the install. This protects the finish while you are maneuvering them into place between the pushrod tubes. Once everything is bolted down and the engine is ready for its first start, peel the tape back to reveal a pristine, scratch-free shine. Also, avoid using harsh degreasers on the chrome once the engine is running, as some chemicals can dull the finish over time.
3. Check for Pushrod Tube Clearance
Because these shrouds sit directly beneath the cylinders, they are in close proximity to your pushrod tubes. Before you torque down your heads or finalize your tinware, rotate the engine by hand and check for any rubbing. If the shrouds are touching the tubes, it can lead to annoying vibrations or, in extreme cases, wear through the tube and cause an oil leak. Ensure there is a slight "air gap" between the shroud and the tube. A little bit of careful alignment now will save you from chasing mysterious rattles or leaks down the road.
