This EMPI chrome nut and washer set is designed for the standard 12-volt charging systems found in air-cooled Volkswagen Type 1 engines. It is a universal fit for both generators and alternators. This kit is ideal for VW Beetles, Karmann Ghias, VW Things, and air-cooled Dune Buggy or Sand Rail applications where a clean, show-quality finish is desired.

Pro Tech Tips for Installation

Proper Shim Alignment: Before tightening the chrome nut, ensure that your pulley shims are correctly placed. These shims determine your belt tension; any shims not used between the pulley halves must be placed on the outside, under the washer, to ensure the nut can tighten down fully against the stack without bottoming out on the shaft threads.

Hold the Pulley Securely: To prevent the alternator or generator shaft from spinning while you tighten the nut, use a specialized pulley holding tool. Avoid wedging a screwdriver into the cooling fins of the fan or the pulley itself, as this can easily bend the metal and cause a permanent vibration or cooling imbalance.

Torque to Spec: While the chrome finish looks great, it shouldn't be over-tightened. Aim for approximately 40 to 45 ft-lbs of torque. Over-tightening can strip the threads on the end of the armature shaft, while under-tightening can allow the pulley to slip, which will quickly woodruff key the shaft and ruin your charging unit.
