Pro Tech Tips for Installation

1. Maintain Proper Shim Count: Always use a minimum of 10 shims during installation. Using fewer than 10 shims can prevent the pulley halves from seating correctly, leading to immediate cracking or failure when the nut is tightened. Proper shim count is critical for the structural integrity of the chrome finish and the metal itself.

2. Store Spares Externally: Belt tension is adjusted by moving shims between the pulley halves. Any shims not used between the halves to set tension must be placed on the outside of the outer pulley half, right under the nut. Never discard extra shims, as they are required to maintain the correct spacing for the pulley nut to torque down properly.

3. Verify Belt Alignment: After installation, rotate the engine by hand to ensure the belt is tracking straight. Improperly seated pulleys or missing shims can cause the belt to ride unevenly, which leads to premature belt wear and excessive heat. A properly shimmed pulley ensures your cooling fan and charging system operate at peak efficiency.
