This EMPI premium exhaust system (Part #00-3120-0) is engineered for Volkswagen Type 1 engines. It is a direct fit for 1300cc to 1600cc based upright engines, commonly found in the VW Beetle. The system features a 1-3/8 inch 16-gauge steel extractor with a small 3-bolt flange positioned at the 1:00 o'clock location to accommodate the included single quiet muffler. Please note that this system is designed for standard upright engines and may not clear custom rear aprons without minor adjustments.

Pro Tech Tips for Installation

Tip 1: Protect the Raw Steel. Because this system is shipped in raw steel, it is highly susceptible to surface rust. Before installation, clean the entire system with a wax and grease remover, then apply a high-quality, high-temperature header paint or ceramic coating to prevent corrosion and keep the exhaust looking new.

Tip 2: Anti-Seize and Copper Nuts. Always use the provided copper nuts during assembly. Copper is softer and handles heat cycles better than steel, preventing the nuts from seizing to the exhaust studs. For added protection, apply a small amount of high-temp anti-seize to the studs to make future maintenance much easier.

Tip 3: Sequence Your Tightening. To ensure a leak-free seal and proper alignment, do not tighten any bolts fully until the entire system (extractor and muffler) is hung and positioned. Start by finger-tightening the cylinder head nuts, then the 3-bolt muffler flange, and finally torque everything down starting from the heads and moving outward to the muffler.
