PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Use the "Plug Chop" Method for Accuracy. To verify if the 150 main jet is correct for your specific engine, perform a plug chop. Accelerate onto a flat stretch of road, hold a steady throttle in third or fourth gear at about 3,500 to 4,000 RPM for 30 seconds, then immediately turn off the ignition and pull over (safely). Remove a spark plug and inspect the porcelain insulator. You are looking for a light tan or "coffee with cream" color. If it is white, you are lean and may need a larger jet; if it is black or sooty, the 150 may be too rich for your current venturi and air corrector combination.
Tip 2: Altitude Adjustments are Key. Remember that as you go up in elevation, the air becomes less dense. If you are tuning your VW in a high-altitude area like Denver, you will generally require a smaller main jet than someone tuning at sea level in Florida. If your engine feels sluggish and "heavy" at high altitudes with a 150 jet, you might be running too rich. Always keep a small assortment of jets in your glovebox tool kit to account for significant changes in elevation during long-distance VW treks.
Tip 3: Never Clean Jets with Metal Wire. Brass is a relatively soft metal, and the precision-drilled hole in this .150 jet is critical to its function. If you suspect a clog from fuel debris, never use a sewing needle or a piece of wire to poke it out, as this will gouge the brass and permanently change the flow characteristics of the jet. Instead, use pressurized carburetor cleaner and compressed air. If the clog persists, soak the jet in a solvent bath to dissolve the varnish without damaging the internal bore.
