OVERVIEW
When you are pushing high horsepower through an air-cooled Volkswagen drivetrain, a standard organic clutch disc simply will not cut it. The Kennedy Engineering 200mm 4-Puck Clutch Disc is the industry standard for serious racers, off-road enthusiasts, and sand rail pilots who demand an uncompromising connection between the crankshaft and the transaxle. Unlike traditional full-face discs that can glaze over or slip under heavy thermal loads, this 4-puck rigid design utilizes high-friction feramic (sintered iron) pads that thrive on heat. The reduced surface area of the four-puck layout increases the pounds-per-square-inch of clamping force applied by the pressure plate, ensuring a "rock-solid" lock-up that eliminates slip during high-RPM launches and aggressive gear changes. If you are tired of smelling burnt clutch material after a hard run at the dunes or the drag strip, this Kennedy disc is the professional-grade solution you have been looking for.
This is a rigid-hub disc, meaning there are no dampening springs to fail or compress, providing a direct, mechanical link that is essential for competition use. Because of the aggressive feramic material and the 4-puck configuration, this disc is designed for "on/off" performance. It is not intended for the faint of heart or for a daily driver stuck in stop-and-go traffic, as it will exhibit significant chatter if you try to feather it. However, for the driver who needs maximum torque capacity in a 200mm package, nothing beats the reliability of Kennedy Engineering. Whether you are running a high-compression stroker motor or a turbocharged powerhouse, this disc provides the durability and bite required to keep your VW moving forward when the competition starts to slide. It is a heavy-duty component built to withstand the rigors of off-road racing and high-performance street-strip applications where failure is not an option.

PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP
1. Surface Preparation is Non-Negotiable
Because the feramic pads on this Kennedy 4-puck disc are incredibly abrasive and designed to "bite," you must ensure that both your flywheel and your pressure plate surfaces are perfectly flat and freshly machined. If you install this aggressive disc on a glazed or heat-checked flywheel, you will experience extreme chatter and premature wear. We always recommend having your flywheel professionally surfaced with a stone grinder (not just turned on a lathe) to provide the optimal friction surface. Additionally, always use a new Kennedy Stage 1, 2, or 3 pressure plate to ensure the clamping force is consistent across the entire disc surface. Don''t cut corners here, or you will be pulling the engine back out within a week.
2. Understand the "On/Off" Nature of Feramic
If you are new to rigid 4-puck discs, you need to adjust your driving style. These discs are not designed for smooth, slow engagement at a stoplight. They are designed to grab and go. If you try to "slip" the clutch to get a smooth start, the disc will likely chatter or "shudder" the entire vehicle. The best way to drive a 4-puck is to minimize the slip time; give the engine a bit more RPM than usual and commit to the engagement. This is why we primarily recommend this disc for dirt, sand, or track use where surface traction allows for a bit of wheel spin to absorb the shock of the instant engagement. For a dedicated street car, you might find a 6-puck or a Kush-lok disc more manageable, but for raw holding power, the 4-puck is king.
3. Check Your Input Shaft and Pilot Bearing
Whenever you have the engine out to replace a clutch disc, it is the perfect time to inspect the support system. A rigid disc like the Kennedy 16-9898-0 transmits more vibration and shock directly to the transaxle than a sprung-hub disc. Ensure your input shaft splines are clean and lightly lubricated with a high-temp anti-seize or specialty clutch grease (do not over-lubricate, or it will fling onto the friction pads). Most importantly, replace your pilot bearing or bushing in the gland nut. A worn pilot bearing can cause the input shaft to wobble, which leads to uneven wear on the 4-puck pads and can eventually damage the transmission front seal or the input shaft itself. Keeping the center of the disc perfectly aligned is critical for the longevity of the rigid hub.
