OVERVIEW
When it comes to the drivetrain of your vintage Volkswagen, there is absolutely no substitute for original equipment quality. The Sachs Premium Throw Out Bearing for IRS-style transmissions is the industry standard for a reason. As a master air-cooled specialist, I can tell you that the throw-out bearing is the hardest working component in your clutch assembly, enduring massive rotational friction every time you depress the pedal. This Sachs unit is designed specifically for the "late-style" guided transmission setups, featuring the integrated clips and flat-ear geometry that ensure a secure, rattle-free connection to your clutch operating shaft. Choosing a premium Sachs bearing means you won''t be pulling the engine again in six months to fix a "cheap" part that started chirping or seized up under pressure.
Understanding the evolution of the VW transaxle is key to getting the right part. This bearing is engineered for the "Guided" style system, which utilizes a guide tube bolted to the transmission''s main drive shaft housing. Unlike the early swing-axle bearings that floated freely, this premium IRS-style bearing glides precisely along the tube, ensuring perfectly centered engagement with the pressure plate fingers. It is critical to note that this bearing is intended for use with "padless" pressure platesthose without the center contact ring. If your pressure plate has a ring in the middle, you are running an early-style setup and this bearing will not work. Whether you are restoring a daily driver Beetle or building a high-performance Baja Bug, this Sachs bearing provides the smooth pedal feel and long-term reliability that Appletree Auto customers demand.

PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP
1. The Guide Tube Inspection
Whenever you have the engine out to replace this bearing, you MUST inspect the guide tube (the metal sleeve the bearing slides on). If that tube has any burrs, deep scratches, or old dried-up grease, the bearing will bind. This causes a "notchy" clutch pedal or, worse, prevents the clutch from fully disengaging. I recommend cleaning the guide tube with a fine Scotch-Brite pad and applying a very thin, almost invisible film of high-temp synthetic grease. Do not over-grease, as excess lubricant can sling onto the clutch disc and cause slipping!
2. Identify Your Pressure Plate Correctly
The most common mistake I see in the shop is "mixing and matching" early and late clutch components. This Sachs bearing is a "Guided" type. It is designed to hit the diaphragm fingers of the pressure plate directly. If your pressure plate has a round metal ring (a thrust pad) in the center, this bearing will be too thick and will cause immediate mechanical interference. Always look at the center of your pressure plate; if it''s "open" with just the spring fingers showing, this is the correct premium bearing for your build.
3. Clip Seating and Fork Alignment
When snapping this bearing onto your clutch operating shaft (the fork), ensure that both clips are fully engaged and that the bearing "ears" sit flat against the fork. A common rookie mistake is to have one side clipped and the other slightly askew. This puts uneven pressure on the bearing races, which will lead to a premature (and noisy) failure. Additionally, check your clutch fork for cracks or twists. If the fork is bent even slightly, it won''t push the bearing straight, leading to a "chatter" that no amount of adjustment will fix. If the fork looks suspicious, replace it while the engine is out!
