Pro Tech Tips for Installation

Optimize Shifter Alignment: To ensure all gears engage smoothly, place the car in neutral before removing your old shifter. Once the new EMPI unit is installed, if you find it difficult to reach certain gears, loosen the base bolts slightly and shift into second gear. Tighten the bolts while the shifter is held in that position to help center the internal shift rod.

Lubricate the Pivot Components: Before bolting the shifter down, apply a generous amount of high-quality lithium grease or moly-grease to the ball at the base of the shifter and the shift rod bushing. This reduces friction and prevents the "notchy" feeling often associated with new performance shifters.

Inspect the Shift Stop Plate: When installing a new shifter, always inspect the condition of your original shift stop plate located in the tunnel. If the plate is worn or bent, the push-button reverse mechanism may not function correctly. Replacing a worn plate at the same time as the shifter ensures the most reliable reverse lockout performance.
