EMPI Urethane Shift Shaft Bushing for VW Aircooled Shift Boxes
Upgrade Your Shifting Precision
The EMPI Urethane Shift Shaft Bushing (Part #5506) is a high-performance replacement for the standard OEM bushing found in Volkswagen shift boxes. Over time, factory plastic or rubber bushings degrade, crack, or fall out entirely, leading to a vague and "sloppy" gear selection. This urethane upgrade provides a much firmer seat for the shift rod, eliminating unwanted play and ensuring that every gear change is crisp and positive. It is designed to fit both stock VW shift shafts and aftermarket universal shafts.
Fitment and Compatibility
This bushing is engineered for VW Aircooled applications including the Beetle, Karmann Ghia, and Type 3, as well as custom Dune Buggies and Sand Rails. It is compatible with most standard shift rod diameters. Note: You must be using a shift box assembly to utilize this specific bushing; it is not a replacement for the mid-tunnel hanger bushing.
Pro Tech Tips for Installation
Tip 1: Use Silicone-Based Grease. Unlike rubber, urethane can occasionally produce a "squeaking" sound if it is installed completely dry. During installation, apply a thin layer of high-quality silicone-based grease to the inner surface of the bushing where the shaft slides to ensure smooth, silent operation.
Tip 2: Inspect the Shift Coupler. If you are replacing this bushing to fix "slop" in your shifter, always take a moment to inspect the rear shift coupler located under the rear seat or inspection plate. A worn front bushing often goes hand-in-hand with a worn rear coupler, and replacing both simultaneously will provide the best results for your shift feel.
Tip 3: Verify Alignment. After installing the new bushing into the shift box, ensure the shift rod is centered and sliding freely before fully tightening your shift box mounting bolts. Because the urethane fits more snugly than the stock material, any slight misalignment in the shift box housing can cause binding if not centered correctly during the reassembly process.
