Pro Tech Tips

Tip 1: Align the Shift Plate Properly. When you bolt the shifter to the floor tunnel, do not tighten the bolts all the way initially. Move the handle through all gears to ensure the gate is centered. If you have trouble finding reverse or second gear, slightly shift the base plate position and then perform the final tightening once the shifts feel crisp.

Tip 2: Replace the Shift Rod Bushing. Before installing your new EMPI shifter, inspect the nylon shift rod bushing located inside the frame tunnel. If this bushing is cracked or missing, the shifter will feel loose regardless of the new parts. Installing a fresh bushing at the same time ensures the best possible performance from your short throw kit.

Tip 3: Lubricate the Reverse Mechanism. To keep the thumb button and internal lockout mechanism operating smoothly, apply a light coat of lithium grease to the base of the shifter and the moving parts during installation. Regular maintenance with a small amount of spray lubricant will prevent the reverse lockout from binding over time.
