OVERVIEW
When you are pushing the limits of your off-road machine, whether it''s a high-horsepower sand rail, a rugged Baja Bug, or a custom long-travel woods buggy, the drivetrain is under constant duress. The 930 CV joint is the gold standard for extreme suspension travel and torque handling in the air-cooled world, but even the strongest forged joint is vulnerable to the elements. This EMPI Off-Road Style IRS CV Boot is specifically engineered to provide a robust shield for your 108mm 930 joints. Unlike standard street boots that crack under the pressure of high-angle articulation, this neoprene replacement is designed to stretch, flex, and endure the punishing environments of the dunes and the desert. By keeping abrasive sand, silt, and moisture out while locking vital high-moly grease in, this boot ensures your drivetrain remains smooth and reliable during the most demanding maneuvers.
Constructed from high-grade neoprene, this boot offers superior resistance to ozone, oil, and trail debris compared to traditional natural rubber components. It is designed to fit perfectly on 930 forged flanges, such as those found in EMPI''s own high-performance kits (like the 86-9300-K). Because off-roading often involves unexpected hazards, having a reliable, direct-replacement boot is essential for both scheduled maintenance and emergency trailside repairs. We sell these individually so you can replace exactly what you need without purchasing an entire kit, though we always recommend keeping a spare in your "trail box." When you install an EMPI 86-9301-0 boot, you are investing in the longevity of your 930 CV joints, preventing premature wear and avoiding the high cost of replacing seized or pitted bearings.

PRO TIPS
1. Avoid the "Ballooning" Effect with Proper Venting
When running 930 CV joints at high speeds or extreme angles, the air inside the boot can heat up and expand, causing the boot to "balloon" out. If the boot expands too much, it can rub against the frame, trailing arms, or even the CV bolts, leading to a catastrophic tear. To prevent this, many pros use a small piece of plastic tubing (like a WD-40 straw or small vacuum line) tucked under the small end of the boot before tightening the clamp. This allows the boot to breathe and equalize pressure without letting grease out or dirt in. Just be sure to zip-tie the vent tube to the axle so it doesn''t get caught in the rotating assembly.
2. Use the Right Grease and Quantity
The 930 CV joint requires high-quality, high-moly grease specifically formulated for CV joints. While it is tempting to pack the boot completely full, "over-stuffing" can actually cause the boot to fail prematurely due to internal hydraulic pressure during suspension compression. You should thoroughly pack the CV joint itself, ensuring grease gets into the cage and balls, and then add a small amount (about the size of a golf ball) inside the boot. This provides a reservoir of lubrication without creating enough mass to tear the neoprene at high RPMs. Always clean the mating surfaces of the boot and the flange with a degreaser before installation to ensure a leak-free seal.
3. Master the Clamp Tension
A common mistake during installation is over-tightening the CV boot clamps, which can actually cut into the neoprene material over time as the axle moves. When installing this EMPI boot, use a dedicated CV boot clamp tool to achieve a snug, even tension. The goal is to prevent the boot from spinning on the flange or axle while maintaining enough flexibility for the material to stretch. After your first "shakedown" run, always inspect the boots for any signs of grease "slinging." If you see grease on the underside of your car, it usually means a clamp is too loose or the boot wasn''t seated perfectly in the flange groove.
