PRO TIPS
1. Master the Winding Technique
Unlike standard snap rings, you don''t use snap-ring pliers for spiral locks. To install them correctly, start one end of the lock into the axle groove and use a small, flat-head screwdriver to "walk" or wind the rest of the spiral into the groove. It is much like putting a key onto a keyring. Make sure you don''t over-stretch the metal while winding it on, as you want the spring tension to remain tight within the groove for maximum holding power. If the lock feels loose once installed, it has been over-extended and should be replaced.
2. Clean the Groove Thoroughly
Before you attempt to install the spiral lock, ensure the axle groove is completely free of old grease and debris. Even though the CV joint is a high-grease environment, having grease in the groove during installation can make it difficult to see if the lock is fully seated. Use a shot of brake cleaner and a stiff brush to clear the channel. Once the lock is snapped into place, you can then apply your high-moly CV grease over the assembly. A properly seated lock should be able to spin within the groove but have zero lateral movement.
3. Check for Full 360-Degree Seating
After the lock is wound onto the axle, always perform a visual and tactile inspection. Use your screwdriver to gently push against the edges of the spiral to confirm that both "layers" of the lock are tucked deep into the groove. In high-angle applications, the CV joint inner race can sometimes put pressure on the lock; if the lock isn''t fully seated, that pressure will pop it right off. Ensure the "tails" of the spiral are not protruding, as this is where most failures begin. If everything is flush, you''re ready to hit the dirt with confidence.
