OVERVIEW
When you''re pushing your off-road machine to its absolute limits, the 930 CV joint stands as the gold standard for high-angle articulation and brute strength. However, even the most expensive race-prepped CV joint is only as reliable as the protection surrounding it. This EMPI IRS CV Boot is the heavy-duty, off-road version specifically engineered to survive the violent cycling and extreme temperatures common in long-travel suspension systems. Unlike standard street boots that may crack or bind when pushed to high degrees of inclination, this boot is manufactured from a specialized, high-flex elastomer that retains its structural integrity even in the harshest environments. It acts as a primary defense system, keeping vital lubrication inside the joint while preventing abrasive sand, silt, and water from grinding your internal components into scrap metal.
Precision fitment is critical when dealing with the oversized 108mm diameter of a 930 Porsche-style CV joint. This off-road version is optimized for use with high-clearance flanges, such as the 86-9302 or the 83-9312-0 Billet Flanges, ensuring a leak-proof seal that won''t pop off under pressure. At Appletree Automotive, we know that off-roaders often run custom axle lengths and varied suspension geometries, which is why we sell these boots individually. This allows you to service your sand rail, Baja Bug, or Manx-style buggy without purchasing unnecessary kits. By investing in this ruggedized boot, you are not just buying a piece of rubber; you are securing the longevity of your drivetrain and ensuring that your next desert excursion isn''t cut short by a preventable mechanical failure.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Grease Volume and Distribution
One of the most common mistakes when installing a new 930 boot is over-packing it with grease. While it is tempting to fill the boot entirely, you must remember that as the CV joint moves and heats up, the grease expands and air pressure builds. If there is no room for expansion, the pressure will either blow the boot off the flange or cause it to "balloon" and rub against the frame or trailing arm. Fill the joint itself thoroughly, but only put a small amount of grease inside the boot to keep the rubber lubricated. Always use a high-moly content grease specifically rated for high-temperature off-road use to ensure the ball bearings don''t gall under heavy loads.
2. The "Burping" Technique for Longevity
After you have clamped the large end of the boot to the flange but before you tighten the small end on the axle, you should "burp" the boot. This involves moving the suspension through its full range of travel to see how the air inside the boot reacts. If the boot looks sucked in or overly pressurized at ride height, use a small, blunt screwdriver to gently lift the edge of the boot and let the air pressure equalize. A neutral pressure state at ride height prevents the rubber from being constantly stressed, which significantly extends the life of the boot and prevents premature cracking at the bellows.
3. Clocking and Clearance Checks
When installing 930 boots on a long-travel car, "clocking" is essential. Ensure that the bellows of the boot are not twisted when the axle is at its maximum droop and maximum compression. If the boot is twisted, the rubber will rub against itself during every rotation, creating friction heat that will melt the boot from the inside out. Furthermore, always check for clearance between the boot and the trailing arm or shock mounts. On many VW off-road setups, the tolerances are tight; if the boot touches any metal component during suspension travel, it will tear almost instantly. Use high-quality stainless steel CV boot clamps rather than plastic zip ties to ensure the boot stays seated during high-RPM operation.
