OVERVIEW
When you are pushing the limits of a performance air-cooled engine, the stock connecting rods are often the first weak link to fail. These EMPI I-Beam Connecting Rods are engineered to bridge the gap between fragile OEM components and expensive race-only hardware. Forged from high-grade 4140 chromoly, these rods offer the structural integrity needed to handle increased RPM ranges and higher compression ratios without the weight penalty of a heavy-duty H-beam. The 5.5-inch length is a specific favorite among engine builders looking to optimize the rod-to-stroke ratio on stroker engines, providing a smoother piston path and reducing side-load friction against the cylinder walls. This results in an engine that not only revs faster but stays cooler and lasts longer under demanding street or off-road conditions.
Precision is everything in a high-performance flat-four, and EMPI has delivered with a rod set that features a reinforced O.E. design. While they maintain the classic I-Beam profile for excellent oil shedding and clearance, every critical dimension has been beefed up. The big end houses heavy-duty 3/8-inch rod bolts rated at a staggering 200,000 psi tensile load, ensuring that your rotating assembly stays together even when you are winding out third gear in the dunes. These rods are designed for the standard VW journal size, making them a direct fit for most aftermarket stroker cranks or turned-down stock cranks. Whether you are building a 1914cc weekend warrior or a 2276cc powerhouse, these 4140 forged rods provide the peace of mind that only professional-grade internals can offer.
FITMENT
These 5.5-inch rods are designed for high-performance applications and are longer than the stock 5.394-inch rods. They are compatible with the following models when used with appropriate stroker crankshafts and pistons:
- Volkswagen Type 1: Beetle, Bug, and Ghia (1954-1979)
- Volkswagen Type 2: Bus, Transporter, and Kombi (1954-1971)
- Volkswagen Type 3: Squareback, Fastback, and Notchback (1961-1973)
- Volkswagen Thing: (1973-1974)
- Custom Applications: Sand Rails, Dune Buggies, and Baja Bugs using Type 1 based engine cases.
- Note: Requires a crankshaft with VW journals (2.165 inches / 55mm).

PRO TIPS
1. Always Check Camshaft Clearance
When stepping up to a 5.5-inch rod and a stroker crankshaft, the physical "swing" of the connecting rod big-end increases significantly compared to a stock 1600cc setup. Even though the I-Beam design is much slimmer than an H-Beam, you must manually rotate the rotating assembly during a mock-up to ensure the rod bolts do not strike the lobes of your camshaft. If clearance is tight (less than .040 inches), you may need to use a small-base circle camshaft or carefully clearanced rod caps to ensure the engine doesn''t self-destruct upon the first startup.
2. Proper Torque and Lubrication
The 3/8-inch bolts included with these rods are capable of extreme clamping force, but they only perform correctly if torqued accurately. Never install these dry. Use a high-quality assembly lube or Moly-based thread lubricant on the threads and the underside of the bolt head. We highly recommend using a rod bolt stretch gauge for the most accurate installation, as this measures the actual tension of the fastener rather than just the friction of the threads. If using a torque wrench, ensure it is calibrated and follow the specific EMPI torque sequence to prevent distorting the big-end bore.
3. Account for the Increased Cylinder Length
Since these rods are roughly .106 inches longer than stock, your piston will sit significantly higher in the cylinder at Top Dead Center (TDC) if you don''t adjust your deck height. This is actually a benefit for many stroker builds, as it allows you to use "stroker" pistons with a shorter compression height or use cylinder spacers (shims) to dial in your exact desired compression ratio. Always measure your deck height with a dial indicator and calculate your compression ratio carefully; a 5.5-inch rod provides a better rod-to-stroke ratio which reduces vibration, but it requires a builder who pays close attention to the math of the long-block assembly.
