Fitment and Compatibility

This 36mm gland nut is designed for Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle, Karmann Ghia, and VW Thing, as well as Type 2 Bus and Type 3 models. It is a direct upgrade for standard 1200cc, 1300cc, 1500cc, and 1600cc based engines. It is essential for any engine utilizing a counterweighted crankshaft or high-lift camshaft where increased stresses are placed on the flywheel connection.

Professional Tech Tips

Verify Torque Specifications: Do not rely on standard hand tools for installation. A chromoly gland nut requires significant torque to seat the flywheel properly. While stock specifications are approximately 217 ft-lbs, high-performance chromoly nuts are often torqued between 275 and 300 ft-lbs. Always use a torque multiplier or a high-quality torque wrench to ensure the nut does not loosen during operation.

Lubricate the Pilot Bearing: The gland nut houses the needle bearing for the transmission input shaft. Before installation, apply a small amount of high-temperature grease to the needle bearings. This ensures the input shaft rotates freely when the clutch is depressed and prevents premature wear on both the bearing and the transmission shaft.

Correct Washer Orientation: The included concave washer is designed to act as a spring to maintain tension. Ensure the concave side faces the flywheel. Installing the washer backward can result in insufficient clamping force, which may lead to sheared flywheel pins or damage to the crankshaft mating surface.
