OVERVIEW
When it comes to the heart of your air-cooled engine, there is absolutely no room for compromise. These premium steel-backed main bearings represent the gold standard for Volkswagen engine restoration and performance builds. Designed for engines where the crankcase has never been line-bored and the crankshaft remains at its factory-original dimensions, this "Standard/Standard/Standard" set ensures a perfect, high-precision fit. Whether you are rebuilding a vintage 40hp 1200cc or a high-revving 1600cc dual-port, these bearings provide the essential foundation for oil pressure stability and rotational harmony. By choosing a steel-backed construction over inferior, softer alternatives, you are ensuring that your engine can withstand the thermal expansion and high-stress environment inherent to the flat-four design.
Precision engineering is what separates a long-lasting engine from a catastrophic failure. These bearings, sourced from industry leaders like Mahle and EMPI, feature a multi-layer composition that offers superior embeddability for tiny particles while maintaining the structural integrity required to support the crankshaft under heavy loads. The "Standard Thrust" designation means these are perfectly suited for stock-dimension flywheel thrust surfaces, providing the necessary lateral support to keep your crank in perfect alignment. In the world of air-cooled VWs, heat is the constant enemy; these bearings are specifically designed to dissipate heat efficiently into the engine case, preventing premature wear and ensuring that your Beetle, Bus, or Ghia stays on the road for decades to come. Don''t settle for "good enough" when you can install the same components used by professional engine builders worldwide.

PRO TIPS
1. Verification is Mandatory
Never assume your engine case or crankshaft is "Standard" just because it looks original. Over the last 50 years, many VW engines have been rebuilt and machined. Before opening the bearing packaging, use a high-quality micrometer to measure your crankshaft journals (should be 50mm) and a bore gauge to check your case (should be 65mm). If your case has been line-bored or your crank turned, these bearings will not fit. Remember, once the vacuum-sealed bearing packaging is opened, they are generally non-returnable due to the risk of contamination.
2. The Dowel Pin Secret
One of the most common mistakes during assembly is failing to properly align the bearing shells with the dowel pins in the engine case. When you lay the bearings into the case halves, ensure the hole in the bearing is perfectly centered over the pin. A common trick is to use a small amount of assembly lube to hold the bearing in place, but you must feel it "click" onto the pin. If the bearing is sitting on top of the pin instead of over it, the case halves will not seal correctly, and you will likely crush the bearing and ruin the engine upon the first rotation.
3. Cleanliness and Lubrication
An air-cooled VW engine is only as reliable as its oiling system. Before installation, ensure the oil galleys in the bearings are completely clear of any manufacturing debris. Use a dedicated engine assembly lubenot just standard motor oilon the bearing surfaces. Assembly lube is designed to stay in place and provide vital protection during the initial "dry" seconds of the first engine start-up before oil pressure is fully built. Ensure your hands and the engine case environment are "white-glove" clean; even a single grain of sand can score a bearing and lead to premature failure.
