1. Precision Deck Height Measurement

When building a 2276cc engine, deck height is the most critical measurement for both performance and safety. Since you are using a long 82mm stroke, even small variations in rod length or case deck height can cause the piston to hit the head or result in a compression ratio that is too high for pump gas. Always aim for a deck height between .040'' and .060''. If your deck height is too tight, use cylinder base shims to move the barrels out. Don''t guess; use a dial indicator and a deck height bridge to ensure every cylinder is identical. Proper deck height ensures a clean burn and prevents catastrophic engine failure at high RPMs.

2. Ring Gapping and Orientation

Never install a piston kit straight out of the box without checking the ring end gap. Even high-quality AA kits require the builder to verify that the rings won''t "butt" ends when they reach operating temperature. Use a feeler gauge to check the gap of each ring inside its respective cylinder. For a high-performance 94mm bore, a general rule of thumb is .004'' of gap for every inch of bore diameter.
