OVERVIEW
When you are looking to squeeze every ounce of reliable street performance out of your air-cooled Volkswagen, the 1915cc engine configuration stands as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the "big bore" world. This AA Performance Products 94mm x 69mm Piston and Cylinder Kit is the cornerstone of that transformation. By increasing your bore from the stock 85.5mm to a massive 94mm, you are not just adding displacement; you are fundamentally changing the torque curve and breathing capabilities of your Type 1 engine. This kit provides a significant jump in horsepower and throttle response that you will feel the moment you pull out of the driveway. Whether you are building a spirited daily driver, a weekend cruiser, or a light-duty off-road rail, the 1915cc setup offers the largest displacement possible using a standard 69mm stroke crankshaft without venturing into the complexities of a long-stroke clearanced engine case.
Quality is paramount when dealing with the increased thermal loads of a 94mm bore, and these hypereutectic cast pistons are engineered to handle the heat. Unlike standard cast pistons, the hypereutectic primary silicon content allows for tighter piston-to-cylinder clearances, which results in a quieter engine, better oil control, and reduced blow-by during cold starts. The cylinders are precision-honed cast iron, designed to provide a stable friction surface for the included high-quality piston rings. It is important to remember that because of the significantly larger outer diameter of these barrels, your engine case and cylinder heads must be machined to accept the larger registers. This is a "thick wall" style kit that requires a 97.2mm opening in the case and a 101.1mm opening in the heads. Don''t settle for mediocre performance when you can build a 1915cc powerhouse that defines the classic VW "California Look" performance era.
FITMENT
This kit is designed for Type 1 based air-cooled engines and requires professional machining of the engine case and cylinder heads. It fits the following models assuming a 1600cc based engine block is used:

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Verify Your Deck Height and Compression Ratio
When installing a 94mm kit, you cannot simply "slap it together" and expect longevity. Because of the larger surface area of the 94mm piston, small changes in deck height have a massive impact on your compression ratio. As a master builder, I recommend aiming for a deck height between .040'' and .060''. If your deck height is too tight, you risk the piston hitting the head at high RPM; if it is too loose, you lose quench and efficiency. Always use a CC-cup to measure your combustion chambers and calculate your exact compression ratio to ensure your 1915cc engine runs cool and avoids destructive detonation.
Tip 2: Never Skip the Ring Gap Inspection
Even though AA Performance Products provides high-quality rings that are often "drop-in" ready, a professional builder always checks the end gap. Insert each ring into its respective cylinder and use a feeler gauge to check the gap. For a 94mm street engine, a general rule of thumb is .004'' of gap for every inch of bore. If the gaps are too tight, the rings will expand when hot, butt their ends together, and snap the piston lands or score the cylinder walls. Taking an extra 20 minutes to file-fit your rings can be the difference between an engine that lasts 50,000 miles and one that fails in the first 500.
Tip 3: Manage the Heat with Proper Tinware
The 94mm cylinders have thinner walls than the 85.5mm or 90.5mm variants, which means they have less "meat" to dissipate heat. To keep your 1915cc engine alive, you must ensure your cooling system is in top-tier condition. Ensure all of your engine tinware is present, including the "forgotten" pieces like the industrial-strength air deflectors under the cylinders (coolies). I highly recommend using a high-quality external oil cooler with a thermostatic fan and ensuring your fan shroud is a "doghouse" style with the large 36HP-style fan. Keeping your head temperatures under 375 degrees Fahrenheit is critical for the long-term health of these large-bore cylinders.
